Battlefield 3 tweaks and fixes

I'll continue updating this thread as tips, tweaks and fixes are found.

How can I play Battlefield 3 using my Steam overlay?
- Disable Origin's overlay (click the gear/cog and go to the "in game" settings tab).
- In Steam, add Origin.exe as a non-steam game to your library.
- Launch the Origin shortcut from your Steam library, then launch BF3.

How do I display my FPS (frames per second)?
- While in-game hold Ctrl + Alt + S. The screen's upper left corner will show your frame rate.
- Or from Console (~) render.DrawFps 1 (0 to turn it off).

If you are experiencing Battlefield 3 black screen issues:
- Update to the latest video card drivers.

If things seem blurry or seemingly unresponsive:
- Disable motion blur in your graphics settings

If players look like they're "floating" in tunnels and dark spaces:
- Re-enable HBAO in your graphics settings

If your graphics preferences don't seem to be saving:
- Restart the game as some of the settings are can't change ingame.

If you get the install Error: “Battlefield 3 (BF3) Install Fails, Cannot Install”
- This is a Microsoft C++ bug so the quick fix is to uninstall your C++ files. If you see 2 instances of Microsoft C++, uninstall both of them; and don’t worry, they are easy to reinstall. There are also a couple workarounds online if you don’t want to uninstall them.

If you can't see your menu or HUD:
- This is a new problem that occurs when using triple monitors (Nvidia Surround or AMD Eyefinity). There is no fix yet, except to run your monitors individually instead of in Surround/Eyefinity.

If you get the error “ERR_LOGIN_DISPLAYTOS” or Cannot join Battlelog
- This is a server issue and out of your control. The BF3 team is aware of it and are working towards a fix.

If you're stuck at the “Joining Server” message or experience long load times on Win 7 64-bit systems
- Start regedit
- Browse to HKEY LOCAL MACHINE/SOFTWARE/WoW6432Node/EA Games
- Change the GDFBinary & InstallDir paths to C:\Program Files (x86)\Origin\Games\Battlefield 3
- Try to launch the game and join game servers, and it should work.

If anyone discovers something worth mention, make sure you share it here.

BF3 Technical Help Thread

Righto,

to start it .. have a look at the following...

This has been happening on and off. Droping from full screen to kinda like a window. I say kinda because the mouse doesnt line up with anything .. and the strange symbols top left are interesting. I thought it might be sticky keys but not that, and not sure what it is ..

Any ideas?

Post 3

looks like multi-lingual keyboard changing stuff. probably because of that Chinese Windows 7 you're running hey?

but yeah, really just looks like it's repeated a chunk of your system tray up there. so not mashing alt+enter?

or it's your ATI card =)

Post 4

Just like to say that Chips needs to make Aegis a stone size figure with a big wang as well.

Post 5

fucking origin chat windows keep borking - so you can type responses to one person but cant change tabs in it nor minimise, nor close it without shutting slow-assed origin down.

Post 6

My nvidia is so good it even fixes game bugs on the fly..... !!!!

Post 7

not sure man, in theory you could just drop everything in it's relevant directories. Origin has the option to save installers i think? worth checking?

Can't wait to get home and give this a good shake, although I can't log into mumble for some reason. I added my username then it wants a password which is none of my normal passwords.... any ideas?

Post 17

I'll delete your account so you can re-connect when I get home.

Or the other way is to Change the wording or lettering of your name. Possible conflict with your Private Key.
But rec's suggestion is easier.

Post 21

That 2nd review must have missed the announcement (or it was published before); about the game being an old 'version'. I highly expect everything he mentioned to be resolved in retail.

Post 22

Implying that they don't currently have a stable alpha to make it to beta.

Post 23

Since when are alphas stable?

Was that from onlinekeystore ?

Post 31

Nah Chips CDKeysHere Why do you pay more?

Post 32

Ah ok, bugger still waiting on mine from OKS :(

Post 33

Sopposedly onlinekeystore will not send them out untill 28th from what I can hear from their support.

I said stuff it and I am just got the online version.

Post 34

I tried logging into the US store, to purchase BF3 they have some damn region checking measures in place. Though I gave up in the end and just purchased it via the Australia store hub instead. I original tried greenman games though at the time they didn't have it on sale. Also didn't want to go via some other 3rd party distribution thinking that some shit like that would happen.

Overall I spent "0 on BFBC2, and have sunk more than 150hrs into the damn game, so to me the BF3 is well worth it for its fun and complete stupidity at times.

Post 35

Still waiting for my Key from Buygamecdkeys.com :(

Post 36

Dear *****,

Thank you for ordering on Origin. The release date for the preorder product has changed. The product listed below will now be available on 26 October 2011.

Post 37

because we already VPN's and been playing for 24hrs ..

Post 38

Hey guys, When ever i try to fire up BF3 thru origin, it then fires up my internet browser, and goes to some stupid game manager web site? is there any way to not have this? as its fucking annoying, i dont want to go thru 4 menus just to fire up 1 dam game..

Post 39

sadly no. Battlelog IS the BF3 menu.

Post 40

Don't launch BF3 via Origin, just leave Origin open. Use Battlelog as your launch pad.

It's actually a better "menu" and a better server browser than any seen in any previous DICE game.

Post 41

which is fine, but i'd prefer they embedded it inside the game - could still be web based - but inside the game.

Post 42

Need fix for this. Renderahead and triple buffering don't quite get rid of it, just minimise it.

Post 43

Mouse drivers?

Post 44

only happens with the new nvidia drivers. Older video drivers are clean on graphics but crash every 3 minutes instead.

Post 45

Buy a new video card. :D

Post 46

Got to checkout with a gtx 570 today and realised I wouldn't get it till tuesday anyway, so figured I'd wait and hope for a new driver :P

Post 47

Now i cant even join up to a single fucking game.. starts loading and then fails, or i get disconnected just after it fully loads into game.. this game fucking sucks..

thats not true, ive only played for like 5 mins.... in russian... and i hate all but BF 1942... and even i think this game is epic :D

Post 49

well atm, i cant even get the dam thing to start.. so its not really a game, just a waste of space. why do they have to make games such a pita now days?

Post 50

I have had a problem since Beta that when I get invited to parties the pop up windows weren't showing up. I have finally found a solution for anyone that uses Avast.

Well solution 1 is to disable the Web Shield. If this isn't acceptable then the following might be better.

Solution 2, add the following addresses to the Web Shield exclusion list;
battlelog-cdn.battlefield.com/*
battlelog.battlefield.com/*
The * at the end is important.

Post 51

better thing is to not use the fucking party system :)

Post 52

It's great.....when it works

Post 53

sooo, ummm, hey guys :)

now that BF 3 is out i'm back! woooooohoooooo

oh, and i'm moving up to darwin in january...

so i'm trying to get mumble connecting, but its telling me remote host disconnected me from server...

Any ideas?

Post 59

You'll need 1.2.3 to connect to the server afaik. You're not in the registered users list currently, so you should be able to connect with that name.

Post 60

Ah, I've just noticed that you're now in. :)

Post 61

Post 62

Anyone come across the you were disconnected from the login server. Seems as though many had it in the beta (not me), now I am getting on a regular basis. Might be 10mins into a game might be after 3 rounds, it varies..

Post 63

ha was about to post this anyway, but

Battlelog / Sign in

cheers to jay

and just in case you're using the same shitty telstra modem that I'm using atm (TG782T)

Post 64

So origin is shit.

If you can get it to start, put it into offline, then maybe it won't crash. You can then run BF3

Post 65

i've seen a no origin exe for bf3 which bypasses origin so you can run it from the browser with a legit key

Post 66

Yeah from razor1911? I didn't think that would be a fantastic idea.

Post 67

Also, if you're done with the Campaign and Co-Op, turn of cloud sync for BF3.
It will often bug out and refuse to sync; which will prevent BF3 from launching at all.

Post 68

EA priorities.

Origin update 8.3.7: stops the client from crashing all the fucking time

previous update 8.3.1: you can now buy DLC from inside the game!
