Why would you buy hardware for an obsolete format? They're discounting it for a reason - they're flushing out existing stock as they make way for their Blu-ray player.

cause some people like me for example are not in the slightest interested in the latest blueray technology, im quite happy to watch my blown up avi.
same with my 360, i dont have it for the spectical of watching a movie in its grandest fashion, i have it to play the cool games that come out. not the cool as in breathtaking effects and graphics but the cool game play and fun.

You're missing the point. Within 24 months no new movies will be released on HD-DVD, rendering it useless unless you plan to re-watch your existing library (that cannot expand) over and over.

Were you one of those people that bought a Beta player when it was clear VHS would be victor?

i will buy it because its 130 bucks for HD video. as opposed to how much for blu-ray?
and i quite like the hd-dvd library atm lots of good titles

    hd-dvd is hardly obsolete

again rec with prematurely coming to conclusions, if it happens it happens - if it doesn't well all the better

My family had Beta when I was a lad. I don't think I've ever quite recovered.

well thast 24months (according to your crazy calculations) that i can watch these formats just for the price of 130 bucks or whatever it is. in 2yrs the newer formats will be much cheaper and i woudlnt be wasting my money.
heck ive never even seen a hd-dvd im still getting used to the dvd phase.
am i fussed? nop i dont give a toss about quality, all im after is watchable.

Then why would you be buying a hd-dvd drive rather then a dvd drive anyway?

$130? why not. now i wish i'd waited until after christmas to buy mine. i dunno about you rec, but i buy movies that i intend to rewatch. the long term viability of the format has no bearing on my ability to continue to enjoy all the content already extant for that format - there's no (i hope) self destruct code built into the discs/players that will render them unusuable when and if hd-dvds are no longer produced.

the real question is, if you have a hd setup at home, and an xbox360, why WOULDNT you get the hd addon at that price.
