IGN: Grand Theft Auto IV Review
Closing Comments
Expectations were so high for Grand Theft Auto IV that one of the biggest surprises is that it’s managed to meet them. That it’s also gone on to confound these is truly a marvel, and the game’s Liberty City is nothing less than one of the greatest videogame worlds yet conceived. With this game, Rockstar has set out to free itself from the excesses of the series past to emphasise the character of its world, and in doing so has created a high watermark in the relationship between narrative and play. It’s no less than the definitive open world game, and by that measure the definitive interactive experience of this generation to date.

No reviews from well-known publishers are yet to rate it less than 100%.

I could go on and on about why Grand Theft Auto IV is one of the best games we've ever seen and why even folks who are easily offended should play it, but that would be pointless. The only thing you need to know is that you have to play this game. Period.

GTA IV is richer, deeper and more involving than its predecessors. By the time the story threads start to tie up, the mission trees shake out, you're totally invested in the characters and their world. I'm actually jealous of everyone about to experience it for the first time. The greatest testament to GTA IV's brilliance is that I haven't been able to stop thinking about it since putting the pad down. [May 2008, p.88]

Now this I thought was an interesting perspective on GTAIV
Watashino Cresta, watashino Cresta, watashino Cresta......OooOOOOOOoOOHHHH MMMYYYY CRREEESSTTAAAAAAA!!!!!!
so, 100%, 10/10. the perfect game, there will never be another better? dont think so.
So long as it drags people away from wow and changes them into normal people again![]()
Turning them back into normal people? Oh, you mean the car-hijacking, prostitute-bashing, gun-weilding, foul-mouthed, wannabe-gangstas... :P
in the context of the ign review though, their 10/10 doesn't mean absolute perfection. I'm also against the whole meaning that a 10 equals everything in the game works flawlessly; theres just no such thing.
Reviews have to be taken relative to the current state of gaming. Remember the first time you played Super Mario bros? Or Ultima Underworld? Or Doom? Or Quake? Or Zelda for the N64? I know with the latter example, I tried playing that in 2001. That was three years after it was released and all just see what the fuss was about. To me, it seemed pretty average and wondered eh. But then I had to put my mind back to 1998 and all the games I had played in between that time period. Needless to say, I had missed out on the initial wow factor of the game but could see why it was rated so high back then.
So with GTAIV, Im hoping that these reviews truly make it out to be one of the next quantum leaps in gaming. God knows how much rubbish I've gone through over the years and be disappointed time after time.
