• SW:TOR beta feedback from Penny Arcade's Gabe

If you're someone who has followed Penny Arcade for any amount of time then you know that Mike Krahulik (aka Gabe) is an epic Star Wars nerd. He's been playing BioWare's upcoming Star Wars: The Old Republic MMO for the last month and has just shared his thoughts. Although the game is still in beta and his post hardly constitutes a review it is still arguably the first feedback so far on the title from a gamer's perspective.

With the recent news that the digital version of SW:TOR will only be available through EA's Origin store dampening the enthusiasm of some fans it is perhaps timely that some positive feedback on the game has emerged to reinvigorate those disappointed by the announcement.

While he speaks about SW:TOR in positive terms, he stresses that he wasn't compelled to do so by either BioWare or his innate Star Wars fanboy-ness. He writes:

It took some begging but finally they agreed and to their credit they didn’t ask to see what I was going to write first. Honestly they had no idea what I was going to say which must have been a little scary considering this is PA, but lucky for them I actually really like their game.
Obviously the setting is a big draw for me but I played the last Star Wars MMO and hated it. So just setting a game in the Star Wars universe isn’t enough for me.
    and:

In the short time I’ve been playing SW:TOR I have already given more thought to my character than I ever did in all the years I played WOW. I’ve had to make hard choices with my Bounty Hunter that have made me honestly think about who he is and what he’s like.

still reserving judgement til the open beta/trial.

I will be curious to see how it stacks against STO at launch. Hopefully they learnt from Cryptic's mistakes, but also hopefully they've learnt from the good things Cryptic has done and is doing too.

This does indeed reinvigorate my interest. I'll buy it retail from the UK, though - screw Origin and their dodgy exclusivity tactics. What's next; ONLY selling a game through a single physical retailer? Dicks.

After all the problem some of my mates had with EDM and all the problem they are having getting their EDM purchases shifted over the Origin I think I will avoid.

As someone who was let down by the way STO turned out I understand where your skepticism comes from. At the same time though we're takling about BioWare here. You know BioWare, right? As in, BioWare. The company that is known as BioWare? As opposed to Cryptic.
