• Modern Warfare 3 will have dedicated servers, pre-purchase for $60

    For those of you interested in playing Modern Warfare 3 on the PC, which I imagine will be far fewer than any previous version, rest assured you won't be slung with some dodgy console-like peer-to-peer match-matching system. Activision has confirmed at GamesCom that the PC version of the game will support dedicated servers.

    There is no word on weather the servers will be through any official set of providers, or if they can be run freely by anyone who sees fit. Activision also said it won't launch the game until a measured and effective anti-cheat solution for the platform is ready, but that the PC game is still on schedule despite that mandate.

    If you care to pre-purchase Modern Warfare 3 on Steam, you can now do so. It's an outrageous $100 for Australian customers, but if you apply the VPN trick we've mentioned many times, you can pick it up for $60.

      i find it hilarious that they can even say they will have dedicated servers, didn't they say that about Black ops?(hosted servers are not the same bloody thing) they also said we WILL be releasing mod tools.... that never happened and they are already on to the next game... wtf man, even as a COD fan, no way in hell will they be getting my money again.

      mod tools for blackops has been out for a while now. But doesnt black ops allow u to host dedicated servers but they just arent ranked?

      I think with MW3 the franchise might finally start to die in the arse. Activision have fucked it the same way they fucked Guitar Hero, although in the case of CoD it's more like unintended euthanasia. Having said that I have no doubt that MW3 will still sell a shitload of copies but I'll be interested to see how the figures compare to Black Ops and MW2 over time. I expect (and hope) we'll see a decline in relative sales as more gamers decide to go with BF3 and more long-time CoD fans like Ratty finally begin to see the light.

      I always bought the CoD series as well as the BF series.

      Unfortunately (for them); that won't be happening anymore most likely.
      BF3 is just looking too grouse.

      It looks like I'm going to have to be the only corporate cock-sucking sell-out here, because I think I'll buy it from the US Steam store for $60.

      It turns out the dedicated servers will be available out-of-box, be free to run by anyone, and now it has been announced that it's a Steamworks title.

      Essentially, they've decided to do right by the community this time. Oh, except for the AU Steam $100 price.

      I might grab it on the UK steam store if it's on special at some point. Doubt that'll happen either though.

      Hosted servers are dedicated servers - you just have to pay for them. People are so retarded. Terminology comprehension required kthx.
