• Battlefield 3 open beta starts tonight, new client required

    With Battlelog being down for maintenance in preparation for the open beta kicking off tonight, I thought I'd check my Battlefield 3 Beta client for updates. It turns out there is an update, a 3.9GB one. Yes, you're being asked to download the entire client yet again for the open beta.

    To begin downloading it yourself, right click on your Battlefield 3 Beta icon and click update.

    With any luck that means a bundle of bug fixes and other updates will be included. Hopefully we can now bind our mouse buttons, join a server as a party problem-free, and sink through the floor of maps at least less than usual. What do you think the chances of unlocked Caspian Border servers are? Fingers crossed.

    The open beta has already begun for the Xbox 360.

    Update: Battlelog is up and is labelled "Open Beta"! Here's the changelog:

    • Allowed Pending EA-ID accounts on the site
    • Minor tweaks and updates to the Stats pages based on reports from the Forums
    • Improved copy on the Origin friends import screen
    • Minor tweaks to the Party and join system

    Update 2: the open beta is now live across all platforms.

      Nup, that' not the client that just began seeding. That's yesterday's patch. Today when hitting update it just started downloading a whole new 4GB.

      Battlelog is up again. Now listed as "Open Beta".

      I do not know why but battlefield 3 just went into open beta and now for some unknown reason i am not able to log into the open beta. I get the message "you are not allowed access" yet it is clearly labled open beta. do we have to wait till 10 PM to log in or are they just not letting anyone in till tomorrow? It's frustrating me!

      apparently the 4gb "update" is downloading the same client into a new folder name?

      You need to have the game added to Origin and downloading the client prior to being able to log into Battlelog.

      Origin.com/download for the client.

      From the official FAQ:

      "ON PC, IT WILL AUTOMATICALLY APPEAR IN THE ORIGIN APPLICATION'S FREE GAMES PAGE."

      Go to store > free games.

      It may not appear until 10pm.

      Updated my previous post with relevant information. You don't need a key - but you may need to wait until 10pm-ish.

      There are also rumors that Caspian Border will go live for the beta for all users at some point today [in the USA]. So perhaps sometime between 10pm-6am AU EST time we'll be playing. I hope so. *tear

      Edit: or maybe not. Kotaku reports that it's massively laggy, which is why the testing is supposed to be internal.
