• Battlefield 3: Battlelog features explained

Battlefield 3's Battlelog developers have chimed in for an interesting walk-through of the web service. They explain what it features, why it's different and why it's important. The video also shows a world first glimpse of Battlelog on the iPhone, which is very cool indeed. For iPhone owners.

"With Battlelog, we are expanding the social aspect of playing Battlefield 3, and Platoons is one of the central concepts in doing that. Check out the Battlelog video above for a closer look at the social platform Battlelog as a whole. Read on for the full details on why being in a Platoon is the most engaging and rewarding way to play Battlefield 3.

"A Platoon is essentially the classic concept of gaming clans, only taken to the next level of flexibility and social interaction. Anyone can start their own Platoon easily in Battlelog. Give your Platoon a name, a description, and an abbreviation, and then you’re ready to start inviting friends through the slick Battlelog interface.

"To personalize your Platoon, you can use the built-in emblem feature in Battlelog, where you pick and choose from ready-made shapes and templates and then place and format them to your liking. Up to 100 players can be part of a Platoon at any given time, and you can be a member of three different Platoons at the same time – you just need to select which of these you want to be active at any one time."

How was BC2 squads awesome. Spawning on anyone is good but I think in clan / battle / competative play it is an overpowering feature just to come back in on one person. In BF2 you at least had to have the Squad leader stand back for a spawn point or at least leave the squad to make someone else squad leader so the rest of the team could spawn if they wanted.

Pub play. Who cares. Not like half the team is there for the objectives of wining or team play - they are just there for cod style killing with vehicles.

The squad system is more conducive to all modes of gameplay. Consider 1942, DC Mod etc. You could literally spend 3 -4 minutes running to get to the action; only to die instantly to a vehicle once you get there. Squad systems let you get back into the battle nice and quick. The only issue i had with BC2's squad spawn system was the second or so invulnerability the spawned member had. Fortunately BF3 doesn't have this. The only adjustment I can see occurring is the recon's beacon. It needs to have a shorter life time.

Also, the Squad system is reportedly 'lite' for the beta. I've read (unconfirmed) reports that it's going to be very similar to BC2.

BF:BC2 let you either PICK the squad you wanted or create your own - regardless of any other shit in there, this is an important feature.

Lenko - i hope you heard right. Tho it seems weird to do it this way for beta.

During the beta, we saw there was “room” for multiple solders on Battlelog, and we’ve heard conflicting news whether we’ll be able to create multiple soldiers. However, according to DICE, those “slots” are for console accounts, meaning that you cannot create a new solder on PC, but if you play Battlefield 3 on a console, you can add your console soldier (e.g. via Xbox Live Gamertag), and track the stats in Battlelog. This is according to DICE’s Daniel Matros, who tweeted the news
Still only one Battlefield 3 soldier per Origin account? - Battlefield 3
