• Battlefield 3 devs proclaim the beta is a true beta

I'm loving the Battlefield 3 beta, yes, even on Operation Metro. Haters be hatin', but I be lovin'. And while lovers are busy playing, haters are busy being very vocal about beta bugs and subsequent pre-order cancelling. All of that whining and angst hasn't been ignored. In fact, it has prompted an official Battlefield Blog update which states in no uncertain terms that this is a beta, with bugs.

I understand that you may be weary about such claims, especially from DICE, who seem to have an impressive track record of creating beta and retail products that are nearly indistinguishable. But this time DICE General Manager, Karl Magnus Troedsson, assures us that it's just not the case.

"The Open Beta is a true Beta.

"The Battlefield 3 Open Beta is based on software that is more than one month old. We need to test the new back end dedicated server structure we’ve built. Not only have we built a new game engine, but an entirely new back end system so that everyone can enjoy the benefits of dedicated servers on all platforms.

"Just like normal procedure when releasing a game, the Open Beta has had long lead times due to testing, certification, and setting up. This means that the code you are now playing is actually quite early and not representative of the final game.

"We had to do this in order to have as many people testing as possible, in order to ensure a top quality experience when the game is released. However, we’re confident in the Battlefield formula and confident that our fans will support us in order to make Battlefield 3 better."

I'll support DICE to make Battlefield 3 better as long as they assure the fans we're going to get a proper "Battlefield Formula" squad system. I'm praying the current set-up is just something that was slapped together for testing. I know I won't be the only one returning the game for our money back if it is released with the current squad system.I still have faith DICE. Don't disappoint.

yeah they've said the squad system in the final is better apparently. My hope for the game is that they add proper LAN support, not just bullshit words about it.

      .
Please stop creating petitions, they will be locked. We have said that the squads are not working properly in the BETA and is a known bug.

this was in an article on the 22nd of August: Battlefield 3 won't have LAN support at launch, maybe later - Neoseeker News Article

[LAN support] will not be in the game when we ship it, but we'll see what we can do afterwards. For us, the shipping of Battlefield 3 is just the start
which is why i'm still hoping for LAN support despite BFBC2 lacking it. Not holding my breath tho, but there is a glimmer of hope.

you can't do it with the browser based client.

yeah you can. it would work whether you want to force players to still need a net connection for play or if it's completely stand alone. Obviously they would need a customised version, but yeah, it's not that hard. most of the existing battlelog system is comprised of AJAX calls back to other systems anyway - so make a cutdown unranked version of those in one app. let that run on client PCs when they're trying for LAN connections.

but yeah, if it goes ahead, the more likely scenario would just be they let players have their unranked servers, and they add another option into the normal battlelog - forcing LANs to require a net connection if you want to play. Better than nothing.

i am having trouble with this browser based server... when ever i try and join a game it take a fair few tries before the game will launch... it just say's joining server and just hangs there i have to do it a couple of times before it lets me in and sometimes it lets me in first go, not sure if it is just me or if anyone else is having this issue?.

i have tried for over an hour now... Battlelog is giving me the shits I have restarted the computer many times - deactivated my firewalls - Enabled game mode - closed my virus scanners - reloaded them - And still battlelog will just continue to say i am joining server and then it will vanish after a while but the game still refuses to load up. I am going to bed i seriously hope this is just a beta thing because i would hate for this Battlelog be the end of BF3 game play for me, I am all for keeping people better connected but to have these types of problems just annoy me when it could be fixed just by launching the game and choosing servers in game..*end of rant*

the biggest problem with battlelog is actually that it's entirely beholden to the end user's web browsing setup. Can i suggest trying a different webbrowser with it? one you wouldnt normally use. I suggest this because you may have toolbars and stuff installed in your default browser that is futzing with the scripting in battlelog. Also I can see how some of the security levels in IE might also screw it over - if you use IE you could try lowering the security level or setting the battlelog site to be trusted.

thanks mate i will give that a go i have tried it on IE (64-bit) -google chrome thus far. i will go ahead and adjust the security level see if that works.

ahh okay. well, DICE never writes a complete product too - so that's always a distinct possibility as well

yeah still not working Such a great game too i do wish it is just beta problems because i do not want to have to buy this for the console >.< just to play the damn thing. This reminds me of Warhammer Online release the game worked great but EA distributed bad Australian DvD copies and lost alot of people as they had to wait weeks for a DvD fix witch was complicated and did not work 100% of the time.Damn EA for putting there bit into games...
