• RAGE will make you do so as it's riddled with problems

In keen anticipation of a hefty play session and the writing of a review I fired up RAGE for the first time last night. It turns out that not even the great id Software is immune to releasing a bad console port, and RAGE certainly appears to be one. Like many others I'll have to wait until some fundamental matters are addressed before playing, as the PC release is currently riddled with problems.

When the game wasn't crashing with errors I wasn't able to enable vsync to reduce tearing, or even change the graphics quality. There's also no option to disable mouse smoothing, which makes things very difficult at low sensitivities. The Steam and Bethesda forums have been inundated with complaints about graphical issues such as texture popping, while readers of GU have had to roll-back Catalyst drivers just to get the game to run.

A post at Bethesda's blog says that most if not all issues "can be attributed to driver issues," which id Software is "currently working with Nvidia and AMD to resolve [...] as quickly as possible." Performance aside, it's disappointing and disheartening to see such little consideration for the PC platform from the pioneers of the first-person-shooter.

I jumped in again tonight. My opinion is very premature, but, *sigh.

From a distance everything looks great, but because there are no graphics settings everything looks shithouse up close. The game decides what graphics setting you should have, and you can't change it. Unfortunately it has obviously mis-detected my PC as a piece of shit, so it runs at around 300fps and has super, super low resolution textures.

The sound effects are awful generally - not just the weapons, the vehicles as well. The audio engineering seems all-round bad: strange sound cut outs etc?

Ultimately it seems like it's supposed to be a really pretty shooting gallery with some loose RPG elements. And that's not necessarily a bad thing, because I could totally get lost in the world which is spectacular to be a part of even with low res textures that pop randomly.

Alas, there are too many strange problems to continue with it, for now. When another patch lands and sets the graphics quality correctly, fixes screen tearing and lets me use my mouse at low sensitivity I'll give it a proper play-through.

PS. Oh and the control scheme - why do I have to click "exit" instead of hit the escape key to exit the inventory? CONSOLE %*@^.

some more infoIssues w/ screen tearing:

•RAGE currently does not have a menu option to turn V-sync on or off.

•If the graphics driver supports a so called "swap-tear" extension then RAGE will use it and RAGE will V-sync when running >= 60 FPS and RAGE will tear when < 60 FPS. Unfortunately at the release of RAGE, none of the graphics drivers have the "swap-tear" extension enabled.

•The user can force V-sync on or off in the graphics vendor control panel. Right-click on the desktop to access the graphics vendor control panel.

      • If V-sync is forced on then RAGE will always V-sync.

•If V-sync is forced off then RAGE will auto-detect that V-sync is not working and RAGE will instead synchronize to real-time and screen tearing may occur.

•Alternatively you can force V-sync on by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam:+r_swapInterval 1

•The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up. Blurry Textures and Texture Popping:

•The texture streaming is limited by the performance and number of cores of the main processor (CPU).

•The higher the resolution at which the game renders and the higher the anti-aliasing setting, the more texture data is needed to texture the environment. If you do not have a high end CPU you may momentarily see blurrier textures and texture popping when the view changes quickly.

•If you have a processor with few cores and you have a high end NVIDIA graphics card then you can try turning on the "GPU Transcode" menu option in the video settings menu in RAGE. By enabling this option a large percentage of the texture calculations are moved to the graphics\ processor (GPU). However, this option is not available on all graphics hardware and may not appear in the menu if your hardware does not support the necessary features.

•On processors with few cores without the ability to turn on "GPU Transcode" you can significantly improve the texture streaming performance by adding the following to the RAGE launch options in Steam: +vt_maxPPF 16

•The launch options can be found by right-clicking on RAGE in Steam and selecting "Properties". Then click on "Set Launch Options" in the dialog that pops up. If you have very few cores like a dual core processor then you can set a lower value like: +vt_maxPPF 8

•If setting these values does not improve the texture streaming performance for you then consider lowering the anti-aliasing setting in the video settings menu in RAGE. You may, for instance, observe slow texture streaming at high resolutions like 2500 x 1600 with anti-aliasing set to 16X. In some cases lowering the anti-aliasing to 8X fixes the problem but lower settings may further improve the texture streaming. Alternatively, or in addition, you can lower the resolution. We hope these help. The teams at id and Bethesda continue to work solutions to help you guys. More to come!

@rec I couldn't have agreed with you more with everything you've noted in your review of the game, very well put! I must admit I didn't have high expectations for this game after seeing all the trailers... However, that inner child within me that grew up playing ALL of id's software and loving everyone of them had kept a glimmer of hope that I would be pleasantly surprised. I can say that I am not, the only enjoyment I get from this game (after all the obvious problems) is the physics when you kill those mutants... Rag doll physics is nothing new of course, though RAGE has got it down perfectly.

PS: I have a monster PC rig, I too was amazed at how the auto-balancer has decided to mistake my rig for an atari 2600
