• JB Hi-Fi begins sale of grey market products

In JB Hi-Fi's annual meeting earlier in 2011, chairman Patrick Elliott stated in response to a question that the business was prepared to move to a “direct import model” if suppliers didn’t reduce the cost price of their goods. That day has come and it's good news for consumers.

Shopping with JB Hi-Fi online you can now get a ton of cheaper DSLR cameras and accessories. For an example of the price difference, a Nikon D3100 and lens kit costs $777 at your local HB HI-FI store, or $596 through their online shop.

With any luck we'll soon see this roll out to PC equipment and peripherals. A Logitech G27 racing wheel can be purchased as cheap as $235 in the USA, but in Australia still holds a RRP of $499, being sold only as cheap as $400 in most instances.

This is a short term win. This wont just screw suppliers it will ultimately effect anyone not willing to follow suit. First person who comes into my store and starts quoting JB grey import prices to me is gonna get smacked.

Why is it that 90% of guest posts on this site are by brain-dead morons?

It's good for consumers, and ultimately will be good for Auatralian business. There is absolutely no reason we should be paying as much as 100% extra for software or hardware considering the strength of our dollar.

Everyone is already ordering direct from overseas as consumers anyway, which is why retail is suffering - so this is a good move for any retailer who starts doing this until local distributors stop charging ridiculous prices.
