• Star Trek Online beta now unlocked on Steam

If you pre-purchased via Steam, fire her up! Your game's status should have just changed from "Not released" to "Not installed". I've just commenced pre-loading the beta, which weighs in at a hefty 10GB. Hopefully, like me, your ISP doesn't count Steam content server downloads towards your monthly quota. I'll be on later this evening, and expect I'll see some of you drifting about, too!

I'm floating around as Ensign Hugh J'Kok, the Vulcan Tactical Officer aboard the USS Budju.

Are there a choice of servers? If so, which are you on? Nice ship name.

Edit: and even better character name, for that matter. You win.

I didnt get a server choice, i've really only played for about 10 minutes, shot some borg, watched a cube attacking through a viewport, then the server crashed on me

Not exactly a positive start. I thought I'd go ahead and do GU's first game-oriented theme based on STO.

it's a beta, it's expected. they were also limited play time slots, so it may just have ended, hard to say.

I was only downloading at 350k/sec via Steam - would have taken most of the evening. Instead I'm downloading the full client installer from Internode at 2MB/sec. I will dump it in the steamapps directory and then let Steam run its magic with some file overwrites and the like. Hope it works... it did with Need for Speed: Shift.

I am looking forward to this, just in the hope it is a different style of MMO. Plus I am a huge nerd.

Have blown my gaming budget this week on Fable TLC and the ultimate Civ IV pack, but will be looking to get this next week if beta offer is still open, or when it launch for realsies.

Downloading the client from Node, installing the files and copying them across to Steam works a dandy. But then the Star Trek Online launcher wants to patch itself anyway, which is another 2.5GB. I'm off to dinner... hopefully I can play when I get back.

That'd be right...Two hours after work spent downloading the 9GB installer. Then it starts patching another 2.5GB, looks to take another 2 hours. I go out for dinner, get home at 9pm, and at 9pm on the dot maintenance starts. Servers won't be back up until 11pm Brissy time.Damn this time zone. Damn it to hell.

Ok, so the servers have come up early - 1 hour early. But now there's another 6.7GB patching.Thankfully the "patch" amount isn't the download amount, that's after decompression. *sigh

8.8GB client download, then 2.5GB patching (approx 1GB download), now 6.7GB patching (approx 2.5GB download). Fucking betas.

Bah, Lenko didn't have any of these crazy-huge patch woes. Must have been something to do with me copying over client directory into Steam. Damn it.

Getting a tonne of errors / disconnects. Haven't actually made it past beaming the Borg into space, heh.
Might just go back to bed and wait for the morning; hopefully it's a little better.

Just finished destroying the Borg threat - major initiation sequence finished. Now I'm free to start questing etc. I was a bit dubious upon initially jumping in, but I'm having a lot of fun with it, despite it feeling quite clunky. Visually it looks pretty swish as far as a mmorpg is concerned, too.

If anyone wants to add me to their in-game friends list, my character@handle should be Deific@reccy

Well, I've run a number of missions so far, got 4 bridge crew, customised my ship, upgraded my deflector array and torpedo launcher and made 3rd Grade Lieutenant.
There is a bit of a learning curve (no where near as bad as EVE); but once i got to grips with it all - man i'm having some serious fun
