• Assassin's Creed 2 now available for pre-purchase

I've been hanging out for Assassin's Creed II for some time, having not played the console release. So I was pleasantly surprised to find out that I could now pre-purchase the highly rated sequel on Steam for $59.99 USD. The price remains the same between AU and US stores, however no price has been listed for the UK at this stage - which is typically cheaper. The game is set to unlock on March 10th.

Be aware of ubis new DRM attached to this title, you need an active Internet connection to install and to play the game. If your connection drops while playing you are booted back to the menu without warning.

I bought AC2 for PS3 a number of months ago. It unfortunately didn't live up to expectations.

Really? I thought the first was good - and apparently this is a hell of a lot better. It has scored an average of 91, compared to its predecessor scoring an average of 81.

As for the DRM; I just don't care.

same thing you said way back when the arguments about Diablo and Starcraft not having LAN support were bandied about - and I'll say the same thing now as I did then: the less we speak up about stupid shit like this, the more game companies will try to get away with. look at what's happened around the traps since then - MW2 shipped with no dedi servers, AVP sure as shit had no intention to support them until the furor over MW2 happened, and i'm sure there's other things i missed too.

Lack of dedicated servers I do have an issue with. The lack of LAN support and needing to be connected to the internet I don't. I fail to see how it's stupid - it's the best implemented idea for piracy prevention so far.

And piracy is the reason we're seeing more and more console ports (MW2) and less PC-tailored development (ie. ports of games that lack dedicated servers because their console counter-parts didn't need them).

When you can load up ac2 in say 3 or 4 years time, and the ubi servers aren't running, how will you play the game that you paid for. How bout on launch day when the auth server melts under load, how willyou use your property then. What about when the local cable guys dig up a bunch of cables, and you want to play a single player game, like say.... Ac2? I have a friend who lives on a cattle station, and he was looking forward to this game, but because of his lack of Internet he can't use it. All of this is because people like you, are happy to accept, even endorse it. You are quite well respected in some gaming circles rec, why don't you use your reputation to make pc gaming a little bit nicer for all of us.

it's all the same man - because we, collectively, are not banding together against stupid publishing house ideas we're getting slapped with more and more shit - paid DLC, non-dedi servers, EULAs preventing modding, worse and worse DRM, DRM that's tied to a master server the publisher can shutdown the minute they release a new version, etc etc.

b.l.a.h. piracy is an excuse. it's no less prevalent on consoles than it is on PC. we all know, and the devs certainly know, that this stupidity will be circumvented damned fast, and the only people who have to suffer through it are those that bought it legitimately and don't know enough to find the hacks.

Brain; I imagine they'll eventually patch it to not need server auth - when revenue streams are exhausted. Just like various games previously got patched to not require the CD anymore. If that isn't the case, then I do have a problem with it.

Aegis; there'll be no banding together. You overestimate the motivation of gamers. You know those R18+ protests in Brisbane and Sydney? Less than 15 people turned up to each. The real protest is in the purchase. If you don't like something about it, don't buy it.

For me though, I will still buy AC2, enjoy it, finish it, and never touch it again. Hell, I might not even finish it. What they're doing in this case is big enough deal to me to warrant a boycott.

This game still isn't available for pre-purchase at the UK store. Gotta feel for those Europeans, though. They're being charged 49,99€ for this (AUD $10 more than our price) - they always seem to get shafted as hard, if not harder than us with Steam prices.

those middle points - only if your internet connection doesn't drop out while trying to play. a single player game should not be beholden to the availability of an external service.

I'm in the fortunate situation of my internet being up for 3-4 weeks at a time. And would probably be longer if it wasn't for me restarting the router.

It's not an ideal solution, but it's pretty much the best anti-piracy measure conceived thus far - despite the obvious and rather major issues for people with flaky connections.

PS. Splinter Cell: Conviction will have this same DRM.

fixed. who's to say if that's going to change next week, tomorrow or even this afternoon. drm ONLY hurts legitimate purchasers.

the current wave of DRM seems mainly designed to prevent second-hand sales :/ but yeah, keep claiming it stops piracy. when it doesn't. ever.
