• GeForce GTX 480 reviewed, fastest GPU in the world

Attachment 6726With the official product launch, reviews for Nvidia's GeForce GTX 470 and 480 are now widely available. Not surprisingly, it's the single fastest card on the planet - but by less than you might imagine. You're looking at $500 USD for the flagship 480 and $349 USD for the 470. Both will be available April 12th in very limited quantities initially. Here are a list of bunch of review links, courtesy of VE3D...

Nvidia's latest WHQL drivers, 197.13, are available now too. Find them here.

Bit of a mixed bag from this review/comparison with the 5870. Driver improvements no doubt will help separate the two out.

Cost was a big surprise though.

All things considered, there's a lot to like here. The Fermi architecture has a lot to offer, particularly where anti-aliasing or tessellation are concerned. The 5870 does have a considerable advantage over the GTX 480 in a number of places. It's overall power draw is lower, it often delivers comparable performance for less, and some perks -- powering 3 displays from a single GPU -- have yet to be addressed by Nvidia. As it stands, until the more games start to take advantage of the technology that Fermi hopes to offer, we'd advise weighing the performance, power, and price benefits before handing over your credit card.

fairly underwhelming really. shitloads of hype for like 6 months, and then a card that is a little bit better - and a lot more expensive - than it's intended competition.

HD5970 still faster, but only because its multi-gpu

I'll be buying the 480 on release day.

Bottom line is that it is faster, even if only slightly, has great drivers, and I love/own Nvidia 3D Vision.

Has anyone seen any numbers for its GPU as a CPU capability? ie folding or in photoshop or any other program that uses the parallel capability of the GPU?

To ensure I'm first in-line for the initial GTX 480 shipment, I just pre-ordered mine through Umart.com.au for a ridiculous $900! But by launch that price should have come down to be competitive with other retailers. If not, I'll have to cancel the pre-order and shop elsewhere. The cheapest I've seen so far is $775, which should drop even further.

GTX 470 being listed as cheap as $499 now, at ITSdirect & PC Case Gear. GTX 480 as cheap as $749, at those same sites.

Ended up having mine delivered today, after many delays. $719 from Brisbane's ITSDirect.

Time to crank some Metro 2033 and Bad Company 2 in 3D.
