Three Google engineers have spent some time porting id Software’s awesome Quake II to HTML5. Call it a tech demo if you will, but it's confessed it wasn't done for anything more than a bit of fun. Unlike browser based games such as Quake Live, no plug-in is required to play. The only requirement is a browser with the latest and greatest HTML5 support, such as Safari or Chrome...
We're told by Chris Ramsdale that they "started with the existing Jake2 Java port of the Quake II engine, then used the Google Web Toolkit (along with WebGL, WebSockets, and a lot of refactoring) to cross-compile it into Javascript." He follows to say that they were surprised with how good the frame rate was - pushing 30fps on their laptops.
Look ma, no plugin! [Google Web Toolkit Blog]
