• Bungie plan to penalise Halo: Reach rage-quitters

It seems that developers are starting to get serious about making sure that the online experience they deliver is fun, and remains fun. We know EA Sports has some anti-rage-quit measures in mind for FIFA 2011, and now Bungie's Brian Jarrard has come out and let their intentions be known on the topic: "people who do this habitually will actually be penalised."

He goes as far as to say that Bungie "want to be able to remove them from the population so they can't make everyone else keep having a bad time." He acknowledges that of course that rage-quitting isn't cheating, "but it creates a really negative experience for everybody else in the game."

The only problems with these types of measures, is that it also unfairly penalizes people who have a legitimate reason for leaving the game; ie RL interference, or internet disconnects.

Suppose if it depends if you find it more fun playing the game or wanking off on your own stats.

It wont really affect the one off quits.

Im guessing they will implement some lock out system for early leavers

I dont think this will occur. The halo series is make up of halo fanboys and 360 fan boys and casual gamers. Why would you build in anything that could result in the loss of a few customers. I would have assumed it easier for your customers to deal with rage quitters than for your company to lose a small profit percentage.

It's not a matter of if it will occur, or even when it will occur. This anti-rage-quit stance will be present in Halo: Reach, being released in September, as stipulated in the interview.

However it won't impact sales at all. And if getting penalised for rage quitting could hurt sales, it wouldn't impact sales any more than people not buying it because of rage quitters.

The only thing this will change is that rage quitters will be most certainly be raging, as opposed to the people victims of a rage quit. Which is how it should be.

I think it's fantastic, it's nice to know they care.

Oh and Milenko, it alleviate your connection drop concerns:

Jarrard didn’t get much more specific, just said that they have advanced ragequit recognition heuristics to make sure they’re not cracking down on people who accidentally drop their net connection.

Cheat detection versus disconnect detection is a completely different kettle of fish.

the point - which you missed like a champion aussie goalie - was that false positives happen it *will* affect some people that it shouldn't

My point was that a false positive in cheat detection means being banned. On the other hand, dropping your connection and Bungie seeing it as a deliberate disconnect (amongst potentially hundreds or thousands of completed games) isn't going to have any negative consequence for the gamer.

if there's no negative consequences for the gamer, why bother?

im not really that fused seeing that it is just halo play it for a month then trade it in for something better ^_^
I dont think Rage quiting a FPS is really that big a deal unless it is a small team game of 5 vs 5 or really a clan battle, but when it happens in a normal Team Deathmatch the spot is usually filled with in seconds anyway.
