• FPS patch arrives for Call of Duty: Black Ops on PC

Just under an hour ago, Treyarch sent a new PC patch live. While an official announcement of what it addresses has not been made, it was previously disclosed that it would address long shader compile times on Nvidia 4 series cards and other FPS optimizations, as well as CPU optimizations and a Zombie matchmaking fix.

Many users are reporting a dramatic drop in CPU usage, as well as a dramatic increase in frames. Some say their issues with the game have been resolved in its entirety while others, despite the improvements, say that the hitching and stuttering remains. Personally, my frames are now through the roof, but I'm still experiencing periods of frame lag.

Gamers-Underground.com servers have now been updated and restarted, so if your client is now up-to-date, jump on and let us know what improvements you're seeing.

The lag has worsen more than prior patch. Game servers search will not display any servers for choosing. This patch really worsen the game. I regret deeply owning this game ever since day one.

      Hi All

Put the latest patch on with no change . I still lock up at CPU 100%.. on the main menu. I hate this company for putting out a game for Xmas cash when they must have known it was REALLY buggy

The game on PC has improved, but hitching still occurs after a while of playing. Maybe midway through a game, serious lag occurs due to hitching. I really hope it is fixed soon.

Same has happened to me and same feelings i am having, why cant they release a game fixed for once? like they used to in the old days... you know when customers were important

You forgot to mention the most important part of today's update, in my opinion: The console is no longer available! I can no longer access the console in single-player, multi-player, or zombie modes. I've checked that they didn't overwrite my config settings, such as the monkeytoy value for accessing the console.

Game is worse. I have a GTX 260. It still LAGS and stutters and SUCKS.. They better fix it quick. I guess they really don't know what they are doing since this fix made it worse. It is back to the way in was released.

I'm still getting the 1fps-whenever-someone-is-shooting issue. Even when I've turned everything down to nothing.

      this game is irritating.

Hey Harb. You want a copy of my Black ops config?
Probably wont fix it but at least give it a go

I'm gonna agree with Vance on this one. It does seem worse than before the patch.

I've done all the mods + then deleted my config + then done all the tweaks again, it's still shit.

I'm almost certain it's a CPU bottlenecking issue, I can play on another machine on the same connection, with the same config and it's fine.

Difference is an i7 cpu and a radeon gfx card, instead of a e8500 and a gtx275.

Pretty much over this game and I haven't even had a chance to play it yet. Will probably be the last time I bother buying a competitive online fps.

Yeah its not a good game actually. Lucky i didnt bother buying it, just using a friends steam acc.

I seem to find that people with nvidia cards suffer more than the ati's

Its running medium pretty good on my ati 4670

Don't say that! There's always Brink. Using an id Software engine, by developers who know what they're doing and actually give a shit about product quality!

Besides, the COD series has become almost the opposite of a competitive FPS. It's the most accessible online shooter experience out there, filled with superficial hooks to keep people involved - like the ranking system and COD dollar system (which will totally be real dollars next game, bastards).

My ping is fine. My frame rate is exceptional. But I'm still getting freezes and stutters - not network related.

I seem to get that every now and again but not every map like i used to prior to the last patch, the stutter seems to only occur after getting a game invite and letting it sit there while i finish off the round im in.

But i ve noticed that there seems to be issues with the invite system lagging the crap outta my machine.

I assume that a lot of people are using machines well below the needed specs for the game, not that I have played it yet and wont till next week when I get home.
I see so many half decent PC's that are poorly set up and run like crap, they are destined to see issue's in high end games especially now that so many are using large monitors and trying to play at resolutions beyond their reach.
We've seen this all before too many times recently with games like Crysis, people with crappy little PC's trying to keep up with the rest and complaining when they just can't do it.
This is only going to get worse in next few years as game makers compete to make ultimate game I really think if you want to play high end then you need to pay high end, I know I've spent enough on my PC and it still disappoints in some areas, I still get a few glitches in some games, what do you do, gaming is expensive.

This game isn't a system-challenger. Black Ops uses an id Tech 3 (Quake 3) foundation. It's merely Modern Warfare with some bells and whistles - frame rates should be comparable to MW, WAW and MW2, as very little has changed.

I run a GTX480, 6GB of DDR3 and an i7 920. I know others who are running 480's in SLI, 12GB of RAM and i7 950's - the problem remains. Yet someone on something far, far worse gets away without a hitch.

System specifications are not the problem here. It's a problem with their game, and it's an acknowledged one.

As for the "Crysis scenario" getting worse over the next few years, where you need high-end to even run a game; quite the opposite is happening, in fact. The high paced graphics evolution we saw early in the decade has ground to a halt, with only studios like Crytek still truly pushing boundaries.

Other developers continue to use id Tech 4 and Unreal Engine 3 technologies - 6 and 3 years old, respectively. Meanwhile, id Software work on id Tech 5, which admittedly isn't the sort of stride forward people expected, as far as visual fidelity is concerned - the focus is on scalability, so it can run on low end devices, even on the iPhone.

The reason being is that most developers are now all designing for multi-platform, and you need to cater for the lowest common denominator, which is consoles. Thus, we're only going to see games looking as good as they can on current generation consoles and no better.

Don't expect to see anything revolutionary again until the next lot of console hardware is in the wild.
