DGA Shuttle Server Change of Config

I was wanting to fix some errors poping up with the Shuttle server, the main one is ease of use for people to admin it and fix a kernel panic.

My question is does anyone have any issues with changing the disto of the shuttle from Gentoo Portage to Ubuntu.

    Cheers

    hehe

Nah seriously... We have a brand spanking ubuntu 6.10 cd sitting next to it as we speak. However it would be imprudent for us to install it without some sort of approval from dga.

Whilst gentoo is regarded as 'the' distro for stability and performace by many, its a pain having the two servers running different flavours. Admittedly this is in part due to none of us really knowing how to configure gentoo to its fullest.

Also... It was good to see a pile of linux cds sitting by the door. Whoever organised that deserves some praise. We can easily organise having an edgy ubuntu repository at dga42 if anyone is interested.

Also RE: windows being installed? Does anyone know if dga owns a legit copy of XP or 2003? It deffinatly wouldnt hurt to have windows installed 'as a last resort' for when games dont have linux servers. It does kind of defeat the benefits of having identical servers sitting next to each other though ...

    i have a 5 licence copy of win 2003 server standard....only used 3...

And as for the windows vs linux server wars, from my point of view, linux has be left behind.

Not to point any fingers but this isn't a thread on Windows Vs Linux or a discussion on if the server is windows or linux. Its about switching the distros from one flavour of Linux to another.

Agreed, Microsoft completely own Linux. Check it out: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsvista/

    FFS!

C'mon don't taint this thread... we can coexist

Lets keep the windows/linux bashing out of this. There is plenty of room elsewhere in these forums for that.
