I posted this in the Arbiter private forum and soon decided what the hell, I'll make it open for everyone to see...
After a few days experience with retail UT2004 I've experimented with a lot of things to improve my play and performance, things that might benefit you all both in the tournament specifically, and in terms of performance...
Better Performance:
- Turn OFF "Text to Speach" options (bar "Voice Chat")
Some people are having major slow down and crashing issues because of it. I'm not, but have disabled it anyway, as it's pretty useless.
- Turn OFF "Speach Recognition"
Much faster loading times. It isn't required if you're not using "Text to Speach".
- Turn OFF "Preload all player skins"
Much faster loading times. Only turn it on if you have 1Gb+ of DDR RAM.
Better Play:
- Choose a small-framed player model
The harder you are to hit, the more time you're going to have to hit back.
- Use FOV 100
Increasing your field of vision (100 is legal limit) simply means you're going to be able to see more... that's always a good thing.
- Turn OFF "Foilage"
Doing this removes useless static map features that can often obscure targets and generally get in the way of clear sight.
- Turn OFF "Coronas"
Doing this removes the often obscuring large glow around distant lights.
- Turn OFF "Weather Effects"
Once again, the less useless enviroment effects that can distract you from your target the better.
- Turn OFF "Play Voices", or at least set it to "No auto-taunts"
Turning these off simply means less distractions so you can focus on where that rocket came from instead of who has an attitude problem.
- Turn OFF "Text to Speach" options
The same reason as above.
- Turn OFF "Weapon Bob"
I've been turning off weapon-bob in games since the days of Quake. I find it helps my accuracy. I can't really explain it, it sort of removes the illusion that you have to compensate for the movement of your weapon... you might understand it better if you try it and agree.
- Turn OFF "Landing Viewshake"
It's plain annoying when you're in the middle of a close fight.
- Turn OFF "Show Portraits" and "Show VoIP Portraits"
Doing this means that area of the screen will never be blocked for useless reasons, such as this one.
- Turn ON "Voice Chat"
Turning this on smiply enables people to use microphones and chat real-time with each other.
- In "Voice Options" make sure only "Autojoin Team Channel" is selected
This ensures you're only going to hear team voice chat, which is the only voice chat that's important.
- In "Voice Options" turn "Voice Chat Volume" up to at least %60
This is just to make sure you're going to hear your team mates when they're talking.
- Turn ON "Small Weapons", or change "Weapon Hand" to "Hidden"
Making your weapon view model as small as possible (if you're like me and feel more secure seeing what weapon you're firing) or removing it from view completely will only ever be a good thing. The more you can see the better.
- Max your "Fog Distance"
Quite simply, you can see further.
