The highly anticipated sequel Deus Ex: Human Revolution by Square Enix was leaked late last night to a “scene release news site” by the Warez scene. It was uploaded to popular
torrent sites shortly after. The leaked copy is the Xbox 360 version.
So far, only the Xbox 360 version of the game has been leaked, as the PC version is distributed separately through Steam. The Warez scene is an online community focused on releasing stolen software onto the internet. The leak, which was uploaded by the scenegroup COMPLEX, was uploaded to the site at approximately 9:29 p.m on Aug. 17. It was uploaded to the popular public torrent site “thepiratebay.org” a short while later.
Deus Ex: Human Revolution has encountered problems with piracy before. In June, an early build of the game was leaked onto torrent sites. Sites such as PCgamer have reported that the leaked early build featured ten hours of the then uncompleted game. The persons responsible for the leak have since been sued by Square Enix for copyright infringement.
According to David McCandless, who wrote a feature titled “Warez Wars” for Wired magazine, the Warez scene is described as “a world of expert crackers who strip the protection from expensive new software and upload copies onto the Net within days of its release.” He goes on to call them “A world of wannabes and collectors, whose hard drives are stuffed like stamp albums, with programs they’ll never use… a world of profit pirates, who do exactly what the software makers say: rip off other people’s stuff and sell it for their own benefit.”
