As a frequent visitor to the ER due to being a clumsy fuck and partaking in high risk past times like BMX my opinion is this: If it's serious you get straight in but if it's not then you have to wait. If it's bad enough you are going to the ER then you won't be doing much else in the first place so time shouldn't be an issue and if it's a small enough issue that you can go about your day straight after it's probably a job for your GP. Yes it sucks but in reality it's not that bad.
I've been in with broken bones and had to wait 5+ hours because at the end of the day it's serious enough to warrant a trip to hospital but it's not something that's likely to get worse in the time I'm sitting there so it's a low priority. On the flipside when I came in with my knee smashed open I was seen immediately and was in surgery in under 1.5 hours.
The ER is often the first point of call for a lot of people when they really should be seeing their GP first. Eg if you have anaphylaxis go to the hospital but if your allergic reaction is just a rash fuck off to your GP and don't waste the hospital's time then bitch they made you wait.
