OK maybe wrong but as far as I have been able to research this is my advise on how to Maximise your HDD performance speed if you choose not to run a RAID system.

This is based on my HARDWARE forum entry

Which IDE port you put it on can effect you PC performance.

As a IDE interface can only access on drive at a time so running you HDD on seperate IDE ports is a good idea here so both drives can access independantly.

To make this work even better you can run your cache(from2 to 4 gig depneding on your amount of ram) on a Primary Partition on the Secondary Master as a FAT32 file and this will increase the system speed and reliablity. Also run Windows(C) on a FAT32 Patition on the Primary Master(10 gig). Programs and Games on a FAT32 Partition on the Primary Master (size as per needed). Then Storage NTFS on the left over space on each drive.

By all reprts FAT32 is a quicker access file, and NTFS a better large storage system, and this gives you cache the maxium chance of running to its best potentional.

Just note that if you have a Burner you should have its image files and Cache for burning on the opposite ATA cable for it, if you wish to burn on the Fly it is also a good setup as the CD reader and CD Burner will be on different ATA cables so should be alot more reliable for on the fly burning.
Also all other drives connect to your PC will then be installed on the Slave plug on the IDE cables, it is then very much recommended for PC HDD access time maximisation is to not share these drives if you heavly utilising your Master Drives.

My Self I have Cache running on a Primary Master SATA drive, Games and PRograms on the Secondary Master SATA and Windows on the Primary Master ATA and a DVD burner on Secondary Master ATA.

While I guess this is more than you really asked I hope this helps.

Your only around the corner from me anyways so if you want a hand to do this then just ask, to set up as per I have suggested you will need to run partition magic if you don't want to loss any data and do this the simply as it does partition resizing and converts from NTFS to FAT32 and vica versa.

Strange we spend extra $$$ to increase performance and then don't take the free options that increase performance.

I was in the understanding that above 40G there was no noticable access difference between NTFS and FAT32.

The main difference between NTFS (New Technology File System) and FAT32 (File Allocation Table) (apparently FAT64 is in production) is security.
