Ok guys, might be a bit premature, but i thought I'd just post up some info on different classes and races, to give you a general idea about what kind of character you wish to make when/if we move over to WoW. I will be mainly focusing on the horde aspect of things, as it appears as most of us wish to play horde.
Basically there are a few factors to keep in mind, as with any MMO out there.
WoW is very much built on a Rock, Paper, Scissors combat system, however every single class in the game has abilities that when correctly used, can be utilised to destroy just about any class in the game.
Each class has 3 skill trees. When you decide to specialise in one (but more often two) of these trees, its referred to as 'specing'.
The tree you decide to spec in can make a massive difference to the abilities and play style of your character. I suggest you do some reading and/or ask some questions before you hit level 10, so you have a rough idea where you want to take yoru character and what you want them to do in the game. You get 1 talent point to spend each level, as of level 10. use them wisely as respeccing does cost money. The first respec is cheap, but the cost doubles each time you do it.
First things first.
Rogues:
IF you want to get into groups with relative ease and if you dont want to be labelled as 'cheese', stay away from rolling a Rogue.
Rogues make up a vast % of the wow population, simply because they are powerful, fast to level and well...rather cheesey. They are great for dealing burst dps or sustained dps (depending on your talent tree, which i will go into later). Typically speaking, Rogues are the highest dps melee class, in instnace groups. Combine all this with the ability to Stealth and skip content (or suprise your enemy from behind more often than not) and you have one sexy character class. Remember, rogues do it from behind. For this reason, there are a few abilities for rogues that MUST be used while behind your target.
Mages:
Mages are your throwers of fireballs. Very very powerful class. They do insane amounts of damage and have more Crowd control than any other class in the game. There are generally two types of Mages. The fire-mage who specialises in, you guessed it, Fire damage. Fire mages are all about high burst damage and impact stuns from their spells. The second type are Frost mages. They are very heavily focussed on Crowd control and ice damage. Most people will level their mage as fire, then switch to frost at level 60 when they enter MC.
The difference between the two classes can be huge, depending on yoru play style and equipment. I personally prefer playing a Frost mage, as controlling your opponent is 50% of pvp tactic in WoW, if not more.
Because mages are so powerful, their spells come at a high mana cost. If you want to play a mage, prepare for a fair bit of downtime to regain mana. If yoru thinking of L2retail downtime, then dont stress. Mages also have the ability to conjur themselves water and bread, which is used to drink/eat (duh) and regain their hp and mana rather quickly.
Warriors:
Warriors are your tanks of the game as per usual. They have a very high Armour value (and can get a huge bonus to their AC Value if spec'd as a protection warrior) and if your serious about raiding instances, you generally NEED one of these in your party. They have the best aggro gaining skills in the game and have methods to retain that aggro. Warriors are the biggest sufferers of having a Talent tree system. If your a protection warrior, you generally fight in instances and only instances. You do very little damage, but you can take alot of it.
If your an Arms/Fury warrior, you do a fair bit of damage, but you lose alot of your aggro gaining abilities, rendering you pretty much undesirable as a tank. My only tip for warriors who are just starting out is this : forget your Protection tree until your 56+. Spend talents to get Mortal Strike as soon as you can. Mortal Strike is a warriors staple.
Priests:
If you want to raid, you need them. While you can get by using Druids and Shamans to heal your raid, Priests will do it much more effectively and make your life easier. They are simply the best healers in the game and combined with their shields, they can increase the life-span of the average player 10 fold. Two types of priests in wow; Holy priests (who focus on healing) and Shadow priests (who focus on damage). Shadow priests are known as 'Face Melters'. Why i hear you ask? Because they are terrific in pvp doing damage and they do not lose out 'too' much on their healing, although there IS a drop n healing efficiency when shadow spec'd.
Warlocks:
Warlocks are my favourite class. They are literally a jack of all trades and master of none. They have the most (i think) spells in the game. They syphon their targets souls and store them for later use in health stones(Basically a health potion), Soulstones (free rez) and 'powerful' spells. While they are very versatile, they do lack somewhat in offensive power. Warlocks are usually focussed in affliction spells, ie, Curses and debuffs. These can inflict alot of hurt on the enemy, but you have to be able to stay away from your enemy while it slowly drains their hp. They focus solely in shadow damage with a touch of fire. They also have the ability to summon Demon pets who tank for them in PvE and others that assist greatly in PvP.
They can drain mana, drain health, increase a persons casting time, reduce their run speeds and inflict health reducing curses in a matter of seconds. Very cool class indeed.
Hunters:
Hunters are (as you would guess) a ranged class. They do very nice damage from afar (up to 45 yards from memory) and have the ability to train animals as their faithful companions. The pets in this game (unlike in others) are very much part of the hunters arsenal. They are very easy to control and (if spec'd correctly) can do a considerable amount of damage. They also act as a tank for teh hunter, in solo pve. Hunters have the ability to lay traps. These can freeze their opponent in place, set them on fire, set multiple targets on fire or have an aoe slowing effect. Hunters also get to Feign Death, in case they start to get a bit low on hp. Hunters make up a large % of dps in certain raid instances (such as onyxia etc). They are mana users, however this is only consumed for their special abilities such as Arcane shot or Concussive Shot (for example). As long as a hunter has hp in his bar and arrows in his quiver, he can keep dealing damage. Hunters are a fun class to play, but like rogues there are quite alot of them about.
Shamans:
Shamans were and to a degree still are considered THE most powerful class in the game. They have excellent offensive capabilities as well as semi-decent defensive abilities. They have passive traits such as reincarnation (a built in self-rez on a timer) and a 15minute hearth stone (very handy when your 10minutes away from a flgihtpath). Shamans also have a healing tree they can spec in, which makes them semi decent healers, which comes in handy in tight situations. Shamans are considered a hybrid melee/healer class, akin to a paladin. They utilize totems to enhance not only their own abilities, but also those of their party and/or raid, replenishing mana or health and embueing their parties weapons with fire, earth or wind effects.
Druids (drooids) :
Druids are probably one of the coolest (after a warlock :p) class to play and yet probably also the least played class in the game.
They are amazing healers and have one of the best buffs in the game (Gift of the wild). They have the stealth capabilities of a rogue, the tanking abilities (if somewhat reduced) of a warrior and slightly lower healing capabilities of a priest. I have on many occassion seen a druid out heal priests and manage to retain a high % of mana. I honestly cant comment too much on them as they are the one class I have never really played. If your interested in serving as a secondary healer but also want the fun aspect of solo pve, a druid might be for you.
