    Record breaking game at Wimbledon

I find this unbelieveable. The game reached the fifth set and as its a grand slam there is no tie break, so you have to win by two clear games. These guys were forced off the court due to poor light (they had been on the court for over 9 hours) standing at 2 sets all and 59 games all in the fifth set !!!

ABC Sport - Record-breakers in 10-hour Wimbledon epic

Returning to court on a scorching day at Wimbledon delicately poised at two sets apiece after the match had been stopped by fading light the day before, Isner and Mahut became embroiled in a brutal war of attrition.

Mahut, who had to survive the qualifying tournament just to reach the first round, had to serve to stay in the match 55 times before the Frenchman asked to stop.

"I want to play on, but I can't see the ball," he told the umpire, who eventually halted proceedings.

Mahut fended off two match points at 32-33, then survived another one at 58-59 when he fired down his jaw-dropping 94th ace.

Isner sent down 98 aces as both players eclipsed the previous record of 78 by Ivo Karlovic in a Davis Cup tie against the Czech Republic last year.

Defending men's champion Roger Federer was shunted off the BBC's live transmission as the drama unfolded on Court 18 as two players who would normally be lucky to make their highlights show unwittingly grabbed the spotlight.

As shadows crept across the court and the sun dipped down, the fifth set was finally curtailed after seven hours and six minutes - the time it takes the International Space Station to orbit Earth four times.

Match of the Day ? Big John Wanted To Go On

Despite appearing physically exhausted after playing for seven hours and six minutes, 6?10?? John Isner did not want play to be suspended at 59-59 all in the deciding set of his first-round match with Nicolas Mahut. With the light fading at 9:10pm, Mahut asked to come off. But in a discussion with the supervisor, Isner appeared to ask if the match could, instead, be resumed under the roof and the lights on Centre Court. Having held four match points, including one in the final game, the American clearly hoped he could win the match without it being carried into a third day. The supervisor?s decision was final, though, and play will resume on Court 18 on Thursday, beginning not before 3:30pm.

    Statistic of the Day

Take your pick! The remarkable match between John Isner and Nicolas Mahut threw up these staggering statistics ? and it still isn?t finished!

    - Longest Known Match In History (10 hours, 163 games)
    - Fifth set alone (seven hours, six minutes) was longer than the previous longest-ever match (six hours, 33 minutes)
    - Most aces served by one player in a men?s singles match (Isner ? 98, Mahut second ? 95); the previous record was held by Ivo Karlovic (78)
    - Most combined aces served in a match (193)

Whoever wins will be so fucked they'll probably lose their next match in straight sets unfortunately.

It goes to show what determination you must have to play at that level though, surely at around 20 all there would have been someone thinking about the possibility of giving up, and having faced multiple match points there must be a split second where you are glad it is about to be all over.

I hope it doesn't just last 10 minutes on the final day though.

Yup I thought the same. Well in fact what I thought was why would you put yourself through that. I'd just have double faulted if there was a match point and go home, but your right these guys are on another level.
