Apparently so! Kotaku is reporting that according to Chinese site UDN, Sony have entered production agreements with two manufacturers to get their assembly lines rolling with the "PS3 slim".
While uncomfired by Sony, it does fit. A PS3 price cut is expected in August, and 80GB PS3 stock appears to be dwindling.
July is rumoured to be the month for production of this slim model, meaning August would be the date it ships out to retailers.
Looks slimmer yes but also way longer.
GU - giving everyone the freedom to post whatever they want...
so long as we can all pay them out if they missed an earlier thread on the same topic!

Just before E3 the above photo and many others were leaked out from a Chinese manufacturing plant. There was also the box for the ps3 slim as well. They seemed pretty legit as the colours used on the benches in the manufacturing building actually match that from photo's of the plants before. That green bench top with pink fabric everywhere.
I think when put to scale against the current PS3 that slim one isn't actually longer. Also the pic you posted is just the top half. There is probably a middle bit and then the bottom like the current PS3
The current rumor is PS3 slim for $299 US announced with GT5 release date at TGS, Sony has also put up patents for PS2 emulation recently as well. Also a redesigned PSN with better Home integration.
All by Christmas lol
edit - heaps of pics first post on this page.

Shame they've stuck with the curve, makes the console hell annoying to stack. Although I suppose it was intended that it would be stacked on top of the 360. Wii's a little hard to balance on top of the ps3 though - fixed with gaffa tape.
still wont be able to get it in my carboring!
