Thread: Beware of Scammers, Please read

Ok we seem to be having a pretty full on situation with people trying to scam us, i personally have been attemtped to be scammed by 3 people just this week, now normally i would of just shrugged it off and told them to F**K OFF, but, this incident today got me wondering what the hell is going on.

Ok i had Wildrain logged in only all last night and today, i been doing some work on my other comp while watching Wildrain which i had set up as a Buy vendor in dion, a guy named Tolkenian or something to the likes sends me a tell, now keep in mind Wildrain isnt in the clan and hardly anyone know in clan he is my alt, except for Anda, Gratzz, Glorseeker, Spear and Acayni. So i get a tell from this guy saying :

Tolkenian says " hey bro you there, its bloodseeker "
You say " yeah sort off "
Tolkenian says " what do u mean sort off? "
You say " what char is that one? "
Tolkenian says " human knight "
You say " you bored of the dagger? "
Tolkenian says " no just needed a change. change of pace "
You say " so whats up? "
Tolkenian says " can i burrow your duals for a sec so i can see this guys p atk with them equipped "
You say " If u log onto Blood or Storm ill trade them with you, cause im not trusting anyone lately cause people have tried to scam me 2 times this week, f**kin scammers "
Tolkenian says " it will take me forever to log them in and out "

Then we got to talking abit, and i got to the point where i almost trusted him, so i asked him a few questions to make 100% sure i knew it was Blood.

You say " r u at work? "
Tolkenian says " home sick "
You say " r u on TS atm? "
Tolkenian says " no, couldnt log on, you? "
You say " havent tried yet "
You say " what time is it there? "
Tolkenian says " 1 "
You say " 1am? "
Tolkenian says " yes "
You say " hmmmm, strange, funny how Bloodseeker is from Australia and its currently 4pm here. "

I had this conversation at 4pm today, Monday arvo, now onto my questions.

1) How the hell are scammers working out who our alts are when the alts are not even in the clan to begin with.

2) Does anyone in Clan suspect anyone of foul play lately, cause for some funny reason i got butterflys in my stomach telling me it could be someone in the clan pulling these stunts especially after this little incident, now dont get me wrong im not pointing the finger at the people i mentioned earlier, i have mentioned in clan chat on Chillies and Taemek that Wildrain is my alt, and ive also mentioned it on here in the Forums. I only used those names earlier to point out the people that know 100% who i was.

Am i being too paranoid, most likely, its in my nature to be paranoid, but 3 times in a week, twice on Chillies and Taemek, now they know who my alt is when they have never even been seen with Chillies or Taemek, oh thats another thing, how the hell did they know i was Chillies and Taemeks alt, how the hell did they know that i was in SB is the whole question, and they try to scam me out of his items, its all a little too coincedental if u ask me.

Blood if this was you man, then sorry, but unless u were over in the USA where it was 1am in the morning, then i seriously doubt it was you, this is a heads up to you newer players out there who have just joined us, dont trust anyone.

I know in the community tab you can see clan leaders but not individual members like Blood

Yeah this guy was ethier Chinese American or American, his english was flawless, none of that, u give me wep, i give right back crap, he spoke proper good.

Im not sure about the rest of you, but this is seriously starting to piss me off, sorry for the language.

I'll reiterate...I will never ask to borrow anyone's gear and no-one should lend their gear to anyone.(Unless their house is within driving distance and you have a baseball bat on hand.)
Obviously it's a bit different for clannies, as you can't duplicate clan tag etc, but if you lend gear, make sure you deal with the clan member, not just some a-hole pretending to be a clannie on an alt.

What i reckon might have happened is they heard us speaking to each other in Giran the other day, when we bumped into each other we were just using normal speak. I didn't know wild then, that's when you said heya man and we had a quick chat. I'd say they overheard and then pretended to be bloodseeker at a later time.

Yes, good point Blood, i forgot all about that, that was the same day that some chinese guys tried to scam Taemek out of the Great Pata's that Anda has lent me, and they used a name Chilllies which my Box char name is Chillies to try and set me up, morons. So be very careful when reading peoples names also.

Blood brings up another excellent point though, as sad as it seems, it might be worth talking in tells all the time when u see a clannie especially in places like Giran, hell anywhere, cause ya never know who is listening.

Im am seriously sickened at the lengths some of these scammers go these days, its just beyond a joke to be honest, very disheartening.

Ok just a word of advice

This scam is nothing new, and there are many permutations of it, just ask Redeamer who handed over his entire B grade armour set and his damascus. Every clan out there has been worked over by the scammers.

The bottom line is this, you know what the mains look like, now learn to spell, yeah thats right, learn to spell the names.
Generally speaking I will not trade gear with anyone nor ask anyone for gear whom I don't know either in RL or for a substantial period of time online.
If a trade is needed for something or other or even if you just want to take screenshots, then we can do alternate stuff like write down each others first names and use those for verification or as was suggested log into TS which is probably the easiest.
Confirm all actions with the other person before confirming trades and you will not have any problems.

Yeah, Katalicious got a tell from someone claiming to be Irreverances alt, that was funny.

I've got the new Perth folks confirming in TS even with us trading amongst ourselves. Ask 'what do you see in the trade window?' and get confirmation that way before you hit trade. We hunt together a lot and they are also often solo'ing so they'll be an obvious target for any scammer paying attention.
