Totems are handy for solo pve, but you will mostly find them a waste of mana, as you generally move out of their range for the next fight.

My main toon is a 60 shammy, at present resto speced (built for PVE healing instance runs).

Shammy has three talent trees, elemental (spells) enhancement (combat) and resoration (healing). Levelling on a pvp server you should be expending points in enhancement all the way down to flurry, being sure to pick up two handed axes/maces skill on the way as you level.

At lower levels you should be using rockbiter on your weapon all the time. Unless in an instance then use fire, frost or nothing, rockbiter is terrible for pulling agro off the main tank and you dont want to look like a newb and pull agro.

When you get higher, you will get a skill called windfury, this will replace rockbiter as your weapon buff. Windfury is exceptional on slow arse high damage weapons, it give you 20% chance to get and extra two "instant" attacks at greatly increased attack power.

Try and find leather armor with +stamina/+strength mixed in with a few peices of +intelligence gear. At 40 you get into mail armor, thats heaven

A very nice bonus for the shammy is at 20 you get wolf form outdoors. Allows you to travel faster, also can be used in combat, combine with earthbind totem to get the smeg out of dodge when things get hairy.

Strength of earth totems and grace of air totems are a great party buff to melee members. Lots of experienced players will request that you drop these in combat.

In PVP earthbind totem is your friend, use it all the time when you are fighting melee players. When you are PVP'ing a caster, make sure you have a
grounding totem down, this will absorb the casters spell. For example, a mage starts casting sheep, throw down the totem and suck that spell up. Use earthshock to interupt his next spell, drop grounding totem...
Also, tremor totems are awesome against locks and priests, it will pop you out of fear.. must have

One other note about PVP. drop cheap totems a lot, player tend to get paranoid about them and try to take them out, when they're hitting a totem they're not hitting you.
