This is why Valve are so awesome. They are proactive not reactive. This was over 2 years in the making and nobody knew a damn thing. Now if they'd only add the portal gun to TF2 )

Pretty sure the robot models were also fan-made.
They ran a competition (probably still going). Any contributions to the Steam Workshop that get included in the game (and thus sold as DLC); the creators get a cut.

Awesome idea really.
