I'm sure there are many sci-fi inspired pants-tent parties in at least a few computer rooms as I write this: Mass Effect 3 has gone gold ahead of its March 9 release. And that is of course confirmation there be no further delay and we'll all be playing as Shepard very shortly. If you're not sure what going 'gold' is, it simply means the game is finished and is ready to be written to discs for distribution. Joy....

It looks like we're stuck with another Origin exclusive for the third instalment of the massively popular Mass Effect franchise. Another treat has been gifted to RPG fans at the Video Game Awards, this time in the shape of a new Mass Effect 3 gameplay trailer. In it, Shepard mounts an attack against the odds as a spectacular sequence of events unfold. It's excitement++ all-round. Also: giant sand worm things.

BioWare has revealed not just a single player demo, scheduled for January 2012, but an accompanying multiplayer beta! For those that aren't aware, Mass Effect 3 ships with an online co-op mode titled Galaxy at War. No specific platforms for either have been confirmed apart from PC, but what we do know is that you'll find early access in new copies of Battlefield 3.

Perhaps the worst kept secret of the impending Mass Effect 3 release is that it will include a multiplayer component. It's official, we have a Star Wars: The Old Republic release date! Detailed on the SWTOR pre-order page are the editions available, related bonus items, system specification requirements and of course the dates themselves; December 20th in North America and December 22nd in Europe.

We've been left in the dark regarding any potential Mass Effect film for quite a long time, but finally dawn breaks, and it's bright! The studio behind Inception and The Dark Knight, Legendary Pictures, is at the helm - having snatched up the rights to the film in May 2010. Excitingly, they've just delivered a press release revealing that it will be a part of their line-up at Comic-Con this July! Screenwriter Mark Protosevich will attend as a part of the studio's panel, as will BioWare's Casey Hudso...

There was plenty of murmurs at E3 2011 about BioWare's interest in multiplayer, even in regards to the Mass Effect universe. Eurogamer is now claiming that information from undisclosed sources confirm that Mass Effect 3 will feature a standalone, four-player co-operative mode. It's said the co-op missions won't tie into the main storyline, and are designed around replay value....

You're undoubtedly aware, if you're a keen participant of any gaming forum or online games service, that there has been a sharp spike in security breaches over the past few weeks. The biggest is of course the PlayStation Network, but since then we've seen attacks on Codemasters, Minecraft, EVE Online, The Escapist and Bethesda. BioWare is the next victim on the list with 18,000 user accounts on the Neverwinter Nights forum hacked....

When I look at Star Wars: The Old Republic, I think "yeah, they can have my money." That was until I found out that the game will be an exclusive on EA's new digital distribution platform; Origin. Frank Gibeau, president of EA Games, told GI.biz that "EA's going to have some of our own platform exclusives," which includes their forthcoming Star Wars MMO....

Mass Effect 3 has been delayed until March 2012, but Bioware assure us the delay will be worth it. And while it has been confirmed that this will be the end of Commander Shepard's story, it has also been confirmed that this is most certainly not the end of the Mass Effect universe.
