Quite a few members here at GU have been keenly anticipating more news on the forthcoming Unreal Engine based mech shooter, Hawken. If you missed the trailer, check it out! It turns out that the beta sign-up for the free-to-play Indie creation has just gone live! The game is due on December 12 of this year, but we're assuming beta access will be granted well before that.

Last week Team Fortress 2 went free to play (F2P), with its biggest update since the game was released in 2007. Since then, TF2 has managed to topple Counter-Strike as the world's most played online first person shooter. Today's peak number of players for CS was 65,420, with TF2 far ahead reaching 97,917. Whether TF2 will now retain the position is another matter, but after what felt like a decade of CS remaining the most popular FPS in the world, it's a refreshing sight.

Steam has launched Free to Play (F2P) support on its digital distribution platform. With the launch are five titles, namely Spiral Knights, Forsaken Worlds, Champions Online: Free for All, Global Agenda: Free Agent, and Alliance of Valliant Arms (AVA). These give titles will receive exclusive in-game content for those who try the "F2P game of the day" on Steam.
