Sony's forthcoming free to play massively multiplayer first person shooter, PlanetSide 2, is now taking applications for beta participation. Head on over to the shiny new PlanetSide 2 website and find the sign-up link in the right column. As for the release date, SOE's John Smedley commented "when it's ready and we are proud of it," but it's expected early 2012.

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida has confirmed on Twitter that the forthcoming Sony PlayStation Vita will be region free. When asked if the new handheld would be region free, the president of Worldwide Studios at Sony Computer Entertainment said in reply "Yes it is". There has been a truckload of chatter regarding the next generation of console reveals and releases recently, and now there's a little more. BGR are reporting that an undisclosed source within Microsoft has confirmed that they plan to unveil their next-gen Xbox console at E3 2012, as previously rumoured. Police have arrested three suspected hackers from the group Anonymous in Spain. After analysing more than two million lines recorded throughout internet chats, they were able to be located in Barcelona, Times Live reports. These suspects are said to be a few of the same members who launched attacks on governments such as Egypt, Iran and New Zealand....

The PSP2 is real, and now it's official. At a Tokyo event today the new handheld, with the apparent power of a PlayStation 3, was revealed. Another Gran Turismo 5 release date has been announced, although this time, we're willing to put money on it sticking - mainly due to it having gone gold over a week ago. A while ago we reported on the rumored PlayStation branded Sony Ericsson phone, complete with a concept image. Well it turns out that was scarily accurate. Now though, we also have some specs for you: inside you will find a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655, 512MB of RAM and 1GB of ROM.

It has been rumored that Mass Effect 2 might make its way to the PlayStation 3. Despite BioWare's previous denial, they've let the cat out of the bag at Germany's GamesCom with the announcement that Mass Effect 2 will see a PlayStation 3 release in January of 2011.

Running closed betas is all-the-rage right now, and it appears that Killzone 3 will be following suit. Sony have thrown online a beta login page, which right now contains nothing but, well, a login. Rumor has it that Sony will be officially announcing the beta program at Gamescom which kicks off in Germany later this week.

There was a lot to see at Comic-Con, including some exciting announcements and reveals. One of the the biggest though, was this DC Universe Online trailer titled "Who Do You Trust". It really is absolutely freaking awesome. The anticipated massively multiplayer superhero RPG is scheduled for release on November2, 2010.

Now this is a truly nifty idea. What if instead of swapping images between eyes to create 3D, you just gave one set of images to player 1, and the other set to player 2? You could both be watching the same screen, but seeing something entirely different. Well, Sony have submitted a patent to do just that.
