Yup.
When i start steam up it takes about 10 seconds for it to come up, and my computer starts going at an extremely slow speed. I try to connect to a server and it sits at the 'Preparing to play counterstrike' screen, and does nothing.
i am so sick of steam.
Let it sit there for about an hour smiddy.
I had the same problem, but i went and ate Marble Chocolate and played my PS2 until it was ready to do its thing (which was about an hour).

try reinstalling, just make sure to backup ure cfg, it shouldnt need to sit ther i dont think, but if you have the 400 meg version of steam with cs or the full 700 meg it shouldnt have to, go to the monitor and it will show you whats downloading
