Too many posts have been locked without reason, too many people are left with unanswered questions.
I suggest that it should be mandatory admins say they locked the post in question and why. It will stop a lot of bickering and I truly think its a more fair method of moderation.
I understand a lot of moderaters go into this as a voluntary thing however there are plenty people GU willing to volunteer thier time if given the chance. When a job has to be done - It should be done well.
Go read the n00b Waystation, everything is within this and a reason to a locked post will be because the user has violated this. What more reason do you need? If something is locked for something other than this than a reason will be given.
From an admins point of view, there has been a lot of useless crap, and I dont mean that from a personal view, but people are posting illegal content, things in wrong forums, a lot in the flame forums, which isnt even a topic for a flame forum, general bitching and whigning of other posters, etc etc.
Don't get me wrong I try to give reason most times but half the time its plain stupid and a reason shouldn't even have to be given.
It's like saying we should remove all police from our society. In which case, if anything and everything was allowed then everything will eventually get out of hand.
You need some people "admins/moderators" to look over everything on this forum, they make the decision as to whether or not the post is fine. If you feel a post was locked for a stupid reason, than maybe try and pm an admin/mod or even msn/icq them and tell them why it should be unlocked instead of posting more crap about how admins/mods arent doing things right or we should do this or that.
BUT ill put it to all admins/mods and see how it goes, thankyou.
They don't -have- to tell us anything at all, but most of the time they do anyway, and as Jono pointed out, the rules are there for everyone to read
The moderators have better things to do with their time then explain why every single post has been locked, especially on all the repetetive things.. just use common sense, and I'm sure you'll find out why some of the threads have been locked.
isn't it rather obvious why posts get locked? there has been some really inane and vapid posting lately and people whining about their thread getting locked/deleted makes no difference at all.
so allong the same theme, why do we bother asking why threads were locked at all? it's a waste of your time.
harb has been purposely deleting things of everyones, just because it wasnt convenient for him. in the image war thread, me and another person posted before him, so he went ahead and deleted our two posts and then told us to post again. this has been done numerous times i believe and something has to be done about it because it is starting to really piss alot of people off.
I'm not saying moderators are lazy. I emphasized on the volunteer side of things.
Better things to do? Dont we all. But if you volunteer for something you cant afford to do a half ass job. It's just not cricket.
Im not saying my idea should be taken up and I understand most of the older(as in been around for a while not age :P) admins will disagree with me. But everytime Jay has edited a post and put his little red writing trademark it has stopped many a retaliation.
If you can lock a post its easy to write a little reason why then people are more likely to stop breaking the rules because they will understand the fine line between the rule and what is actually allowed. Much easier to get it into thier heads and it will stop more posts from being made about it and less anger towards mods and less work for the mods.
If you think about it - It makes sense.
On a note I think all Admins and Mods are way to defensive - not everythig is a personal attack chill out.
Hey, jono, sperO is suggesting it would be nice if admins spent 15 seconds adding a concise reason for locking threads. I have noticed that certain admins consistantly do add final says, which is appreciated, so what spero is asking, and i agree, is that the trend is followed by the rest of the admins.
i really dun care much and come here on the rarest occasions... but they i figure my suggestion would be that the admins arethe referees and they cannot do their job if everyone is questioning them all the time, the moderators are the guys who talk to the admins and so you have to talk to the moderators with repect to find out things and if the moderator things it is a fair enough reason and feels that informing the rest of the people will just cause more problems then they are welcome to... you guys get the privalidge of posting, and it could be worse if nothing was moderate, so take it a bit as it comes... or start your own forum :)
ps. don't bother responding at me because i won't read this again.. so direct your anger at the wall :)
In regards to Harb and the image thread, we've cleaned it up at times to keep the general flow going nicely, also not to throw it off in a bad direction. eg. The dildo wars that started. Also no sense keeping 4 posts of the same image per se, which will make the thread a bit longer and harder to keep up with not to mention the 56k'ers
Also quite a few of the things that Harb makes he confers with some of us in the IRC channel to see what others think. So he's not exactly making executive nazi decisions.
I'll apologise but I have been sometimes lazy and sometimes avoiding my little tags in stuff I moderate because sometimes instead I'll get annoyed with the PM's and IM's I'll get after moderating something, then spend more time explaning why I did it and explain further on why it is bad. However if it's really small like I'll remove a couple of words to stop it being a talk about illegal chat I won't leave a message. If it's a whole thread about illegal stuff I'll leave an edit as Jono did for Azreal's thread.

i witnessed this.. harb removed 2 images so he could put a picture of John Howard..
Smiddy, Harb deletes alot of posts and locks them, he does it for a reason, most of my topics/posts get deleted or locked.... but thats because im a bum bum head.
i agree with spero's suggestion. there have been an awful lot of threads locked latley and i personally cant usually see why. some are pointless, but they are good fun, so i dont see whats so bad about that. i have shitty connections, but it dosnt bother me for something i am wanting to look at, like the image war thing. sure it takes forever to load, but its good fun so i wait. i guess most of us dont get to see whats been deleted because were not always here (*cough* burk *cough* :P ) so i guess what one dosnt know cant hurt them. but a quick line about why and it would really go a long way with the rest of us.
i think tho that the main reason things seem to be getting out of hand at the moment is because GU is growing heaps of late and its not just a small little community anymore where everyone knows everyone else. moderation has to be on the up and somethings have to be taken out because of the age of some members and such and new rules have to be made.... but were still not big enough to become impersonal are we? most mods and admins are floating around replying to posts and such anywho. i dont see the harm in posting why they locked a thread before locking it.... just my thoughts! :)
