Hey there,

I was just wondering if any of yous could help me out.
I just moved to Fannie Bay and I was told when I connected the phone with Telstra I could get ADSL.
I went into the Telstra shop at Cas' and was talking to the guy there (very bloody rude if I may say) and they did there little computer jizz wizz b/s then told me I could not get it. Thinking the little shit was just trying to push me away so he did not have to do any work, on the way back home I dropped in at Hardly Normall. They did the same test, to find the same result. The guy there was very friendly and informed me he was an ex Telstra worker (I wonder why :?: )
He told me Telstra are just being lazy cause he said all they have to do is type in a few codes at the box and bob's your uncle.
So being in the pissed off mood I was in I rang Telstra to ask them what is going on. They did the test, and said, "yes, ADSL is avaiable to the Fannie Bay exchange" (the Fannie Bay exchange being only 35m's up the road, I thought no prob's, I thought wrong). The lady on the other end of the line told me my "fair gain" cable was not acceptable from the exchange to the house, after telling her that the exchange was merly next door she eat her words. But still no help as I am still yet to get my ADSL.
I was surfing the net on my 56k modem which is only running at 31kbps (is this normall for up here ? I was get 51-53 in Melbourne) and came across the Bigpong Broadand website, it had an online register for ADSL, so I thought I would watse another 5 min's of my time. During registration it siad it was all fine and that I could get ADSL, and they said I should get the box wihin 10 days, well it's been 14 days and still no box....
Once again I have lost the little faith I had for Australian phone company's.
If anyone can help me with directing me to a website that explains the requirements of exchanges and phone lines to the house for broadband I would like that very much so I can write a letter to Telstra.
Thanks,

Jada

i suspect it was 'pair gain' not 'fair gain'. it is not possible to get adsl on pair gain lines. if you have those, you're SOL unless you can get them replaced.

Thanks,

Fact 1: Telstra as I said are farked, and I don't see them lying the whole 35m of new phone line in the near future...looks like i'll just have to cancel my phone line and wait for optus to lay the cables for me.

It's not hard, it's only 35m, Telstra just can't be fucked, so far they've already lost 4 months of my money and another 20 months that would be on the contract, so say that contract is around $2000, times the number of house that are in the street (around 60), that's a total of around "20,000. Now to me that's alot of money, but to Telstra sounds like there not in it for the money, it must be their in it to make 95% of all aussie's have ADSL........in which bloody liftime ???

why dont you come back to the Telstra shop in casuarina and see me. Then tell me who said that you couldnt get it. If you on a pairgain then we can put in a request to see if you can get adsl... ohh and it only takes like 1 min to find out if you can get it or not if he used the computer he would have given you a good result.. so i say come back to the shop and see me my name is Christos cant miss me the big Greek

I get 49.2-50.

Then if he finds it was raker that did the little jig, he'll beat his head in for you ;)

But really, the people at the Telstra shop are great people usually. Don't blame the workers for the higher level faults.

Connecting on the 56k probably would be due to your isp giving you a lower speed modem. Here in Melbourne the max I get is 49 on connection, in Darwin I would get the same.

Oh and paragraphs are your friend.

It's extremely easy to put through broadband connections. Any employee at the store generally jumps at the chance at putting one through as it takes some time to do, but is no more than filling out a form on our intranet and grabbing details off of the customer.

If our systems tell us you cannot get ADSL, you cannot get it. We are legally obligated to turn you down if our systems tell us you are unable to use the ADSL service. We cannot sell you anything physical nor contractual without it giving us a green light.

We're just employees, we're not actually Telstra. Why people treat us like it's our individual problem is beyond me - I can't remember treating any employees of any corporate franchise in that manner.

Its Telstra :P it comes with the job...

I understand that employees of Telstra get a little shit thrown there way (sometimes it's called for - like the service I got when I was in the Shop, now that is the employees fault but also it could also be seen as Telstra's managment fault for not passing down the correct training for customer service)...

Then again this is Darwin and I'm yet to go to a business with good customer service skills. (It's not your fault.)

The reason why I'm a little pissed off is cause when I first rang Telstra when I moved to Darwin I was told before I got the phone connected that I would get ADSL. This is the only reason why I had the home phone put on. When I get around to getting some spare time and going into the store I'm meet by an employee that turned into a down right smartarse when he told me I could not get ADSL and basically told me to go away and did not even want to help me. He did not even want to try and sell my ISDN (but then again who would when it costs more then ADSL for slower speeds).

So yeah, this is the reason for this post. I will cancel the home phone and say good bye to Telstra, for internet I just get Arafura Connect Wireless and just claim it under the business name.

Jada.
