driver install "access denied" ???

just installed windows, for some unknow reason when i install a driver (any driver) chipset to capture card, it half intstalls it, but says "access denied"

every where on the net seems to give some reason but for other devices. eg printers, scanners.

had this same config (sys wise) for ages so there is not change.

tried re-setting all settings, old bios (good old Dual-bios rollback), older drivers, newer drivers.

just makes no sense. i have heard of some install procedures that can play around with the driver signing within windows XP. but that all seems ok.

all this happens before i can connect to the net.
(original windows ne way) blank hdd's, driver cd's

ne one with idea's?? very strange. never seen this before.

The only thing of that comes to mind straight away would be user privs. Log in as Administrator and see if that solves the problem.

yeah thats what i thought.

but its fresh install and i am the admin. there are no other accounts. the guest account hasnt been activated.

Is it just with drivers or is it with other software as well? Try putting in a Flash Drive or something.

thats really weird have you got some weird version of windows. at the uni you cant install anything either but that is just because of networking. try reformatting with another windows cd.

Well, from your description, it doesnt seem to be related to user privelages.
The next thing i would check, is if its attempting to stop/start services in order to install.
Try restarting winblows in safe mode and see if it allows you to install then.
It probably wont, but worht a shot.

i have a feeling its my chipset, cant seem to do anythin. but if you install it quick enough you can get it in...but if one gets that error then it continues. but the main 2 that just wont install are the SMBus, Raid Cont. so yeah. ive tried everythin.

this is the same version of windows that ive always used etc. n have tried others. so im pretty much out of idea's

I reckon its your 'driver signing' options.
try, going to the

System Properties>
Hardware>
Driver Signing

I'm guessing somewhere through the install you set up dont allow unsigned drivers by default.

Anyway, you need to select the 'warn' option.

I had the exact same problem....

I was trying to install a display driver and kept getting 'access denied'. The solution was to enable the 'write' rights to the Run key under HKLM in the registry. I disabled write access to foil any virus that like to startup there. Once everyone had write access, it installed with no problems (it did add some startup things as well). Let me know if you need instructions on checking.

in other places also. it is almost definately a registry permissions error, but it's kind of weird to get it on a clean install. i had this error a few years ago trying to install a network card, was really quite annoying. i can't remember the exact registry branch iwas causing the error, but it was nothing to do with the run branch. i'll go browsing and see if i can remember.

a quick fix would be to open regedit, right click on each key and select permissions. make sure the administrators group has full control. then click the advanced tab and check the box next to ''Replace permissions on all child..."

then make sure you're logged in as an administrator to install the hardware.
