We are currently with Internode and on a 12Gb Plan. we have 53% of our monthly days left and 51% of our cap left (12gb). However, internode consider this plan an 'unlimited' plan and therefore it goes under the shaping rule.
The thing that shits me most, is that statistically speaking, we are downloading our allowable daily average, yet they drop our download speeds to 27Kbps. I hardly think thats fair, considering that we are attempting to use our 'cap' at a VERY reasonable rate. Hell, any slower and we would be WASTING our cap.
I can understand shaping being necessary for people who abuse their downloads and go over their 'cap', but why should i (a person who uses his monthly quota VERY rarely) be penalised.
At 27kpbs, i will be hard stretched to hit the monthly limit. Granted, i may download nothing for a week, then blow two weeks 'budget' in a single week, but i still dont feel as though people should be penalised for this, considering that we are merely using our alotted download.
You should only get capped when you hit 12 Gb. Im on the same plan and I can use as much as I want whenever I want up until the total reaches 12Gb for that billing period.
Sounds to me like you have flatrate and unlimited (premium with shaping) confused. Either that or you have a line fault.
Rate-limiting slows the speed of your DSL connection down to 96 kb/s for data downloaded between 100% and 150% of your traffic allowance, and to 64 kb/s for any further data downloaded. It does not affect your DSL connection's upload speed. Rate-limiting only affects the period in which the traffic allowance has been exceeded. Traffic downloaded from WAIX or servers on Arachnet's free list is not subject to rate-limiting.
I get 8GB from 8am to 10pm and 10pm to 8am i get 8GB aswell swiftnet split it into on and off peak times i pay 5 bucks for a gig over in any peak period. but i dont usually go over
Telstra unlimited "19.00 average 35 gig a month over last 3 months no shaping no halts just pure data flying in at 110k/s or therabouts (mind u i think after seeing Overdrives speed im gettting the raw deal there somewhere, but seeing as i havent paid for it yet, all is good)
Ozemail 1.5mb 12gig shapped... once 12 gig is reached its meant to slow down... but my total so far this month stands at 36840.78 Mb and i am still getting 160k/s though i did stop serious downloading over a week ago.
average speed for a 256/64 ADSL connection averages around 25-26 kbps, but sometimes it reaches up to 35 at a constant speed, it really depends on the bandwidth a website offers.
Edit: My ADSL is 256/64 ( :( ) but I have reached high speeds downloading from certain sites.

no, actually, it depends on the file contents being transferred, and if they are already compressed or not. uncompressed data may be compressed during transfer, artificially inflating your transfer rates so they appear more than they actually are.
text files are a good example of data that will transfer higher than your theoretical limit, because of compression.
you could be transferring an mp3 from an oc256 link and your 256/64 dsl would not approach 35 kb/sec. 27, maybe 28, definately not 35.
Perhaps you should switch to iiNet's unlimited plans.
For instance, I pay $80 p/m for 512/128 unlimited. There is shaping, but it works like this:
First 32 gigabytes download are unshaped, no matter what. After that, you are only shaped if the network is kind of overloaded, for a short time, and only if you're in the top 10% of downloaders during that period, at progressively lower speeds ie. 256, 128 etc.
I think some of the lower price plans are also under the same 'unlimited' features, so you might want to take a look at it. Fast churn support is being dropped in two weeks though, so if you're interested, you might want to investigate soon.

Correct. You can download at an apparent 8k/sec on a 56k connection while tranferring uncompressed data. Don't kid yourself and think you can actually downoad that fast, however.
