Hi all, im interested in buying a motherbaord and replacing the current one i have, ive been meaning to do it for a while and now that the motherboard fan is starting to make noises, as if comming loose (is there a fix for this? a si will be usng the board for future use) ive decided i need a new board, (and as well as getting a 3000/3200 cpu (amd athlon xp)
The mother board needs to support agp X 8, 6600GT agp DDR 400 ram amd athlon XP chip.
He might have to depending on his budget and willingness to get a new vid card.
BUT as pala stated don’t get a xp. Your going to upgrade your cpu anyways so why not spend a tad extra and get a beast. athlon 64 is a gaming marvel and it has hypertransport and 64bit support. If you fancy overclocking then this is the toy for you. Socket 939 is the way to go, but if you’re looking to save a bit of money then a socket 754 will do the trick.
I know jack shit about the best mobo's for these chips but I work with gigabyte boards every working day of my life and I can assure you they are rock solid. If your looking to overclock there is properly a better brand to get. Just find one to suit you, they come with everything these days, gigabyte LAN, audio, wireless even.
It's simple. Why do you need to get a new one? If you want my general advice, don't bother upgrading your motherboard unless you totally need a new one ie: your getting a completely new CPU or maybe some new ram/video card.
XPs are just about gone.. they don't exist anymore like 2 models or something left.. You got the Semprons and the Athlon64s.. I'd go the latter or nothing :p
AGP is not worth it for future use, new cards these days dont have an agp brother/sister.. so pci-e all the way.
So, my advice is to hold off buying a new motherboard until you can also buy a new cpu and graphic card, or whatever you will need.

Im looking at going 64 bit, i have not got a lot of mony as i am involeved in a demanding sport as of now (traveling a bit) and will look into it further, i9 was planning on going 64 bit just didnt have the mony, but i have a bit now and would like to.. i have a bugdet ( i know i know, not very big) of about 400$ for a cpu and mobo..

If you can spare like another $50 or something you could go with a 3200+
Just my opinion. $400 is cutting it a bit, but have to make do with that budget. Just remember ~"5 for postage. See if Brownie can do something for ya.
thnx jono, i think i gotta look at gettin a psu eventually to lol, my card had a spaz attack while playing eq2, a milion "insuficent power" boxes came up, so i changed the molex cables around and seems to be ok, eve BF2 loads faster!..any of topic, ill speak to brownie for sure :)
