it crashes 24/7, when overclocking, it doesnt even boot. its slow, crappy, and i hate it.

My Suse server box's crash more then my win server 2003 ones, and also the crashes are a lot worse. And thats after i stopped using fedora because it was worse then Suse. :P
If you treat windows right it'll run fine. I have a boxes here that have been on and used without rebooting for well over 300 days.
But then again it all depends on the hardware.

Woke up, and my PC was up to date.
Still fail to see the issue... If you want cutting edge software (or stable/hardened - take your pick) optimsed and tailored - then this is it. Screw the bloat.
I mean, it's not like you have to stick around and help it compile by hand...

1. If enough updates build up on you, it takes longer than sleep to render the computer up to date.
2. The performance improvements are marginal in most cases. I agree it's cool to have them, but they are marginal. Mostly because gcc has pretty underwhelming optimisation abilities.
3. Gentoo is not "walkaway safe". It can and does blow away critical system files when updating world, such as oh I dunno the /etc/fstab file, without which important programs will silently fail. Yeah, you don't have to manually fiddle to stop that from happening *snort*.
Of course it's horses for courses. Gentoo is for the secret thrill of squeezing an extra 1 or 2% performance out of your machine in unusual corner cases, for feeling like the elite, for singing praises. I've been there, I ran gentoo as my primary desktop OS for about 6 months. Eventually I got sick of waiting for upgrades to compile and having random shite happen when upgrading that broke my box.
Meanwhile over in Debian land, Stuff Just Works, and it keeps on working. Turn it on, leave it running, and a debian box will chug along forever without screwing you. The thing that makes debian updates slower is what makes it so attractive: testing. Debian promises not to do stuff like silently screw inetd or blow away important system config files, and it doesn't. It doesn't need me to constantly hand hold and fiddle with USE flags, filters and slots. It just works, the way this linux thing is meant to.
