Help Please - In the Market for a New PC...

Mog has had enough of the laptop and wants a new PC. Here is one we saw advertised. Can we please get some feedback as to whether it would be sufficient for our needs, being L2 mainly as well as the usual other things people use PCs for. What minimum specs would you recommend?

Also looking for a monitor - LCD 19". Is 8ms the best for gaming, how about the contrast ratio?

Thanks
dudes

Looks like a decent deal to me.

I believe 8ms is the best atm for LCD's :)

Post 3

5ms is .. but still $$$

Post 4

Marks got a 3ms moniter :o it looks sexy!!!! i wanted to **** it

Post 5

hehe how does the rest of the machine specs look guys?

Post 6

Damn you Mog and Red, if you purchase that pc it'll be better than mine:eek: (says he who still has a geforce4:-( :-( )

Nah system specs look absolutely fine, price not too bad either. X800GT will be plenty sufficient for L2's graphic requirements, although personally i'd spend the $49 to upgrade the vid card to the uncut X800.

1Gb ram is enough, dare i say minimum as xp will leech most your memory:p :p

Anyway that deal looks fine to me, the pc will be plenty powerful enough.
Seems priced ok, havent looked at pricing for a few months now so can't say if it's an awesome deal or just a normal one sorry.

Personally I wouldn't go Pentium 4. I'd go AMD Athlon 64. They're cheaper, run cooler and are better for most things, especially games.

As for LCDs, there are a number of issues to consider, the foremost of which is budget. To get a top of the line 19" will set you back $700ish atm.

Take a good look at this:
http://configure.us.dell.com/dellstore/config.aspx?c=us&cs=19&l=en&oc=DXPS600SAP&s=dhs

Current deal till wed. gives free shipping, and for only +$380 you can get a 24" widescreen and dell is the best for computers and screens. If that link doesnt work just go to dell.com and look under their gaming section.

I have a dell 20" widescreen and it is the best ever, got it for about $500 and that was + S&H.

Remember $US > $AUD, so we'd be paying more once conversion is factored in.

Post 10

OH! Didn't know about the usd -vs- aud...

...still you might want to check it out, the add on for the 24" lcd might make up the difference.

U also have the diff power to dealwith when buying stuff from the US.

Post 12

As far LCD's go...the best for colours and contrast is the VX930B with 1000:1 ratio..but mine is the VX924 which im happy to say is on most A list's as the best out there...3ms goodness :D Viewsonic is the brand. here its about $700 for the 3ms one tho...(got mine for $520 in singapore /flex)

thats a pretty good deal though...i'd pay the $50 and get the better graphics card and just get a 3.0...whats 2 or 3 hundred megahertz between friends :P

Post 13

thanks for the replies

I got some more info on the above spec and have been looking at truck loads of variations upon variations for motherboards, video cards ram you name it.

Sepc quoted in 1st post:
Motherboard: Abit - LG81 or AL8-V
Memory: Aenoen brand 2 x 512
Hard Disk: W/D 200gb SATA
Video: Sapphire 128mg +$50 = 256mg X800GTO

Monitor: either Benq 91G+ 8ms 500:1 =$575/ Samsung 913B 8ms 500:1 = $605 or Samsung 8ms 700:1 = $695

Not sure on the brands for the memory or video card, but hey is that important.

the one thing i have learnt from this is that its more difficult to buy a PC than it is to buy just about anythig else. So many variations between varoius items.

Post 15

sorry to bump this again, but is there a difference in terms of gaming quality etc between a video card with AGP and PCI-Express?

I'm still looking (got distracted for a bit) and have found another quote

http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/P3.pdf

the video card is AGP /shrug

mog

Post 16

AGP = old technology
PCI Express = new technology.

they wont make any new graphics cards in agp because pci-express is better.

it wont make a huge difference, only if you want a 7800 or x1800.

Post 17

Dunno for certain but they'll prob still make mainboards with agp, computer industry has to be backwards compatible to some extent for all those peeps who can't afford to buy a whole new package.

But yeah pci-express is the future until they make the next tech step after approx 16 seconds after the 'new' stuff.

Post 18

as far as i know pci-x is different and better than pci-express, but agp is dying out, same with 478pin mobos, its all 775 pci-express.

not much difference if you arent paying all out for a 7800 or 1800 like i said.

Post 19

Just so theres no ambiguity:

PCI (Peripheral Connection Interface) was the 33Mbit (or 66 in some cases but ignore that) connection invented about the time of the original Pentium (prior to that it was ISA or, in rare cases, EISA).

AGP is basically a dedicated overclocked PCI bus for the graphics card eg AGP 4x was 4x the speed of PCI.

PCIe or PCI Express is the successor to both PCI and AGP. A standard PCI slot will slowly be replaced by a 1x PCIe slot. It is a physicaily different connection to both AGP and PCI (which are different to one another). PCIe 1.0 has 20 "lanes". Typically this is a 16x slot for the graphics card (ie 16 lanes) and (up to) 4 1x slots (1 lane each). SLI configs use 8 lanes to each graphics card.

PCI-x was a proposed successor to PCI that never got off the ground because it was too expensive to implement. You will find it iirc rarely in some server cases.

If you mean PCI express, the correct term is PCIe.

Post 20

Yeah my apologies i was replying to what Heretic said so i thought it obvious what i meant even though i completely fcked it up.

Edited above post cos i'm a dumb bastard.

Post 21

1gb ram
gigabyte sli motherboard
7800gtx
160gb hard disk
940b samsung 19" 8ms

I have all the settings in L2 turned to max. OMG i am blinded by the detail.

i looks SO damm great.

Mog looks even sexier

mog

ps thanks for the help.

Post 22

WOW

Nice machine bud, puts my POS to shame :)

Whats that screen like?

Post 23

About the same as mine, but using an old video card because it fried :(

Speaking of which, anyone know a good 256mb video card that is reasonably cheap. Its not that money is a huge issue, its just I can't really justify spending 600-700 on a beauty.
