I wouldnt invest in a large display screen considering most of the content you watch for dvd, tv, cable is still in pal format/dvd format. Will wait until you have 720p or 1080i content to actualy watch on those display devices before even investing any money into home entertainment systems.

I don't know what res most of the programming on free-to-air digital TV is, but its a hell of a lot nicer than DVD. Channel 7 & 9 run special HDTV presentations during the day here... really just makes you want to hump the TV.

Post 16

lol, yeh it is nice. but give it 4 hours and the sink goes on the sound. However that can be fixed by changing back to the channel.

Love it for the tennis. go to 7's HD2? and it shows the game on one half and then displays the stat count on the other half

Damn its like a shit fight trying to get information out of the broadcaster of what they're broadcasting.

Seems like most HD content in Australia is being done is 576 progressive scan. Now this isnt classified as HD tv in America they have the following

"Under the American ATSC formats, 576p (480p) is not considered HDTV.but EDTV. Unfortunately, Standards Australia has defined 576p as an HDTV format, due to the fact that 576p can only be decoded with an MP@HL decoder. An American HDTV information guide offers the following delineation between 576p (480p) and the higher line formats, “On smaller direct-view TV sets, 480p is noticeably better than the analog 480i, but on the much larger, ‘projection’ sets, SDTV (480/576p) cannot compare to High Definition Television’s 720p, or 1080i formats (HDTV Info Guide, 2003). The implication is that the limited resolution of 576p will become more apparent with larger display screens."

Now please note that Australian broastcast is in Pal 480 interlaced, meaning the tottal number of visual lines shown at one time is 480/2= 240 Lines per frame. Where Progressive scan gives you each frame 576 Lines! So before you jump to conclusions that 576 is only a step up from 480i your wrong, its about 2.4 time bigger than the current standered 480i.

So in the long run what should you buy?! Well buy a Plasma/LCD display that its native resultion is bigger than 1280 x 720 or the same. It will enable you to watch ALL and i mean ALL new HD content that is coming out in the near future.

Considering how HDTV is going around the world and seeing that all broadcaster thinking there format is the best, is see another huge region war happening again with HD-DVDs in the near future.

Btw if you have an imagin 480p against 576p allways look at the compression ratio. I rather look at a nice 480p compressed image than the same 576p image compressed over the same bandwidth.
