I have looked around on the internet to not much avail so I come here for answers.
My dvd rom will not read cd's anymore, it appears to read dvds fine but as soon as a cd goes in it wont even go so far as to detect its presence.
So far I have deleted the drive and reinstalled (didn't work)
reinstalled direct x 9.0c (didn't work)
I'm running winxp (legit)sp2, dx9.0c, I'm thinking a very dedicated virus, or maybe a shonkey ide cabel.
ideas? solutions? either would be helpful.

My guess is your DVD-ROM drive is screwed. $89. Go buy a DVD burner.

How many cds have you tried? Are you sure its not your cds?

I had a Sony one, same problem - just replaced it and now its great.
