18 Jun BRA [Image: http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/06/flag/sm2/bra.gif]: AUS [Image: http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/fifa/06/flag/sm2/aus.gif] 18:00

10:00pm Darwin time

Well we won the first match.. so the second one just happens to be against the hardest team.. i really hope we can win but i dont think its going to happen :(
Either way i will be watching the game.. and i will be going for Aussie!

Post 2

It's the game tonight against our remaining competitors that will be interesting... Brazil needs to win.

Post 3

I thought it was a 1:30 am match with Aust v Braz. Might have to go double check that.

Either way I'll be watching it. With Aust's awsome outcome last night I think it'll be an equally thrilling game. Ofcourse the odds are with Brazil, but I love supporting underdogs, especially when it's the Australians!

Post 4

Yeah I'm excited. AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE!

Cheers

Post 7

dissapointing starting time.

Post 8

Ouch! That Late????

Post 9

It could have been a 4:30am match... now that's late! :p

Post 10

no thats early..

Post 11

I watched the Ghana Vs Italy match early this morning =D

Post 12

Australia can get through to the 2nd round without winning any more matches if the following happens:
1. Japan beat croation by 1 goal
2. Japan lose to Brazil
3. Australia lose to croatia by 1 goal
Australia v Brazil is irrelvant.
This will end up as
Brazil on 9
Australia on 3 by 2 goals
Japan and Croatia on 3 by 1 goal

Post 13

Brazil only beat Croatia 1-0

Post 14

your point being?

Post 15

they didnt play like the superstars that people think they are. pretty big point if you ask me.

Post 16

dont kid yourselves.

after brazil barely won vs croatia they will come out all guns firing on us.

I see it being 3-0 to brazil

Post 17

sunday night will tell

Post 19

so thats 1am for us territorians?

Post 20

yes

Post 21

yeah brzil is gunna be lookin for some blood next game!

also our coach has pretty much given up already, he doesn't wanna puty aloise or cahill in just in case they get another yellow eaCH, if they do they wont be alowed to play croatia!

so its gunna be wierd!

Post 22

whats the point of not trying to beat them? even if we qualify we will have to play them eventually, may as well be now.

Post 23

Why are you always so negative heretic?
Show some enthusiasm, encouragement and support once in a while, you will live longer.

Post 24

Will it be on cable? Totally wana watch it even if it looks grim

Post 25

do the yellow cards reset if we get to the second round

Post 26

better hope so

Post 27

Quote from swamp rat:
do the yellow cards reset if we get to the second round

can we get a check on that?

Post 28

read in the paper today

yellow cards last for two matches, so the ones from the previous game will carry on to the second game against brazil

Quote:
Another yellow card for midfielder Vince Grella, defender Craig Moore, two-goal hero Tim Cahill or substitute striker John Aloisi against Brazil in Munich next Monday morning (AEST) will automatically rule them out of the June 22 match with Croatia, which could decide which team goes through to the knockout second round stage.

Post 29

i can see the coaches POV. ie brazil is goign to flogg us so why risk it

Post 30

Gonna be a great game to watch, and we've been underdogs the whole time so nothing changes there.

Go Aussie Go :)

Post 31

yet if we beat brazil the craotia game doesnt mean as much in regards to winning or losing.

meh .. as if not play your best team against the best team in the world.

Post 32

If he plays our best team, chances are we'll still lose (11:1 apparently) but we could gain more yellow cards on our good players. That'll mean they'll have to sit out against croatia, lowering our chances of winning there.

If we don't win or draw against either Brazil or Croatia, we'll have a tough time making it to stage 2.

Post 33

I agree with the coach - seems ref's love giving our guys yellows... you want your best team for the game your most likely to win.

Post 34

thats coz we are apparently the ruffest (how do u spell that word?) playing team!

And regardles of how we do against brazil if we beat croatia we are in the second round!
i still hope we beat brazil tho!!!!!

Post 35

So you right off the game against brazil then you put all your cards on the table for the last game ..

yeah i dont agree with that idea. but thats me .. everybody says brazil is playing average .. and croatia are full strength no injuries. so yeah. we will see.

I can see it coming back around and biting australia in the arse.

Post 36

If Brazil had smashed croatia, I would probably think differently... Brazil is getting a canning in the world press - they will be out for a big one.

Post 37

Also - check this page - http://blogs.guardian.co.uk/worldcup06/2006/06/12/pure_hollywood_from_the_soccer.html

Man - pomms really do whinge a lot.

Post 38

I understand the thinking, but we are on a high ..

So what we go in wth "lesser" then best players get raped ?? 4/5- nil then what demoralize and go into the croatia game on a loss, who says croatia doesnt get all fired up after the Japan game?

so i see the reason i just dont understand why .. surely the players can be smart enough not to do professional fouls .. which is the only way to get a yellow card. as when u watch they were all doing pro fouls to get the cards.

but meh

Post 39

No - it has nothing do with with being "smart enough" - its the refs call - and its always bloody 50/50. What would happen would be the guys on yellow dont go in hard AT ALL - thus a team the calibre of brazil running rings around us. Better to have a guy with no yellows that CAN go hard.

Post 40

Keeping vaguely on the subject of soccer - check out what I just picked up at Dan Murphy's :

Post 41

so what happens with kewell? gets a yellow vs brazil - rest him vs croatia?

the game we will have to win to get through ??

or viduka, or any other player?

I see the 50/50 calls.

Post 42

Well, obviously you wouldnt then, as its the last game, and yellows get reset.

The way I see it, these guys know how the world cup works, especially with refs. I trust the coaches call on this one...

Post 43

im one of those people that would risk the game suspension. to win against a team thats not performing.. instead of waiting for the last game, when both teams are probably going to be in a must win situation.

Post 44

Brazil is going to flog Aus so they should have a bye cause thats all their good for :P

Post 45

how's greece going in the world cup this year?

Post 46

I think the Aussies are in a strong position at the moment... we are on top of our group and we have a good chance with our goal difference to make it to the next round (at least as group runners-up)

We could also get a good run in the first game of the second round... have you seen any of the games from group E... Makes the palmerston under12s look good...

Post 47

Nice one cow :)

Post 48

Pwned :p

Post 49

Greece who the hell are they?

Post 50

guus announced that he is playing all of the best players for australia. INCLUDING those on yellow cards.

Atleast now the game shouldnt be one sided, and we will really see what this australian team is made of.

Post 51

if Ghana can beat no2 ranked Czech. we can beat Brazil.

dude, did you even read what i said? i was saying we should give it our all to beat brazil, and not just try and survive, why is that negative?

damn you OD, and damn you Dan Murphy's, i wish there was one up here. who has to work on monday and is still going to watch it? :P

Post 53

Well either way.. im up to watch the game.. i gotta work at 7 on monday :(

Post 54

so whats everyones plan for tonight
i dont know if i shoudl stay up for the game or wake up for it

Post 55

ill be waking up for it .. sick atm .. slept pretty much from 4pm yesterday till around 11am this morning .. so yeah

im waking up for it .. or might catch the japan croatia game that is on before it.

Post 56

I'll stay up for the start. If Cahill dosn't play Im not watching. He is our hero.

Post 57

how is cahill our hero?

scrapy goal, could of gone to anyone. and him and aloisi both scored good goals.

and dont say HE got us to the world cup cause thats Bullshit. it was all the keeper. saving our arses.

Post 58

cahill didnt do much, josh kennedy played better than him IMO.

and yeah straight home from work to bed for me, then wake up at around 1am for some dinner beer and soccer :)

Hewitte has a chance on grass cause he slides from one side of the court to the other.

Post 63

Yeah make a new thread Brownie and psyave..
i just put "00 down on Australia to win.. its paying $8.50 - 1 .. sooo good luck to me and the aussies!!!

AUSSIE AUSSIE AUSSIE

Post 64

croatia and japan just drew for anyone who cares about the rest of our pools results

Post 65

Well... here goes, kick off!

Post 66

Some close calls so far.. 24 mins in.. come on australia

Post 67

i've noticed their game being played much better than last time. ref is much fairer, still giving some stupid penalties to brazil though

gooooo aussies!

CMON CAHILL! scored the penalty and yellow card against brazil, but was it your head or leg that got hit!

Post 68

Our strikes have been laughable... where's the power? Meanwhile, Ronaldinho looks like a real threat - scares the shit out of me everytime he steps up near our penalty box.

PS. watching this game in high-def on my widescreen Sony looks incredible. Perhaps the highest quality sporting broadcast I've seen.

Post 69

"this is good team fieldwork from australia, oh, but as i say that, chipperfield has chipped one into space"

go commentator

Post 70

Half time, 0-0.

Brett Emerton is really impressing. Great footwork, great speed. Bresciano had quite a nice crack at the Brazilian goal at the end of the half - too high unfortunately though.

We've made some nice retievals and interceptions, but haven't been able to generate anything too substancial from them however.

Let's hope some magic eventuates after the break.

Post 71

hahaha yeah heard that one cow..
Well played by australia.. i just want 1 goal up.. thats all i ask.
come on aussies WIN THIS THING ALREADY!!!

Post 72

heheeh watching the Nike ads.. i think what they really wanted to say was F**k History

Post 73

I think you might be right, Metal. ;)

2nd half - game-on! I'd like to see us keep up the structured defence and start pushing a little harder up front. Should be an awesome half.

Post 74

****!

poor save goalie, poor save

Post 75

F*CK.

It was a shit strike, and a shit attempt at a save. Woeful effort from Ronaldo, woeful effort from Schwartzer.

Let's just get it back already.

Post 76

just saw the brazil goal replay, don't see how ronaldo's effort was woeful on that attempt, it was a good capture and pass to an eventual goal...

Post 77

kewel should of got that, a open goal
-_-

Post 78

His strike was woeful, to be more specific. Hardly deserving of a goal. Not better than our shitty strikes in the opening 15 minutes of the first half.

Bresciano was very impressive again with that run into Brazillian territory, unfortunately he choked inside the penalty box.

An exciting couple of Australian chances immediately after too, with Sterjovski and Kewell. It's good to see our offence getting more aggressive.

Post 79

Aloisi comes on. Action in the Brazillian back-half is heating up as we start pushing harder.

Gotta hand it to Kaka just there, brilliant work, thankfully he didn't score - great save from Schwartzer.

Post 80

Jesus Christ that was one hell of a shot at goal from Bresciano, borrowing moves from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. Great save from the Brazillian keeper too.

Post 81

i just want them to do what they did to japan

Post 82

F*ck this is intense. Great pressure from both teams. I just wish we would convert one of these many opportunities arrising.

Post 83

you deserve the loss australia.

sigh

Post 84

God damn. All over.

Good game, unfortunate end with that walk-in goal for Brazil.

Post 85

hahahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahah cow

Brazil Brazil Brazil

:P

Post 86

Great game, although it was a loss they should walk away from that with their heads held high, much better played then the Japan game imo.

Post 87

hey cock...
ITS BRAZIL!!! the team who won the cup last time.. We dident expect to win.. it would of been nice tho.. Support your Country. at least thats what we are doing..

Post 88

All is not lost; we only need a draw against Croatia to go through to the next round.

We had what it takes to knock Brazil off their feet, unfortunately we were let down by a poor attempt at a save in my opinion. Schwartzer just shouldn't have let that in.

Regardless, we had many genuine opportunities for scoring, and let them all escape us.

Overall we played well though - a performance to be proud of. Look forward to the next game.

agree, although that ref just seemed to favour brazil a little bit with some weak fouls. Australia played well in defence, Lucas Neil held that together, best player for australia for me. Cahill didn't impress me in first half.

Options now to beat Croatia, or hold them to a draw, and hope brazil beat japan.

Apart from that blatant red card Australia should have got for the 'stud in the shin' foul in the first 15mins. All in all though, it ended as I expected. Brazil defaintly didn't show their usual flair. Shown by the odds at the bookies :)

After all Ronhaldino spent half his time wandering about, until the coach smacked him upside the head. Effectively Brazil was playing with a 10 man team. Once the subs where made, things tended to even out. And although they are not a shadow of the world cup team from 2002 - The Australian team can leave with their heads held high.

In all honesty, they never had a chance of winning the cup (sure stranger things have happened). I just hope they can take away this expirience and build on it. They may be a force to be reconed with in future world cup tournaments.

They missed alot of opportunites, and took big risks with the 1:1 marking; a lack of pace, and an inability to finish- unfortuantly, the lack of expirience showed, and Brazil took advantage - with a scrappy last goal. The media geniuses are already calling Kewell the Aussie's Crouch - choker :) The Aussie needed to slow down and take stock. The Brazilians were jogging for most of it. They had more time to line up than they realised.

Australia needs to watch the rough play too - it's not rugby :)

My 2c.

Man - pomms really do whinge a lot.

It's "pom". And he has a valid point. If only the focus of the public at large lasted in Australia after the world cup. Lots of potnential is lost to overseas teams due to a complete lack of funding for the game professionally.

Or maybe he heard the 50 million whinging Aussies in South London (read: little Australia) calling "soccer" a poofs game while they kick an "AFL" ball about claiming an Irish game of Gaelic Football is in no way an influence - and starting brawls about Fosters with the local "soccer" hooligans. While whining about everthing English and at the same time doing everything in their power to never have to leave and go home...

/sigh
