Im staying up for this one.. Australia made it through to the second round and for that they did well.. more then anyone could of asked..thats a lot better then Greece did.. wait are they even in the world cup. ;)
Australia's defence has stiffened up since their first game against Japan, their good at setting themselves up with goal scoring opportunities too, they just seem to struggle to convert them into actual goals. I expect Aust and Italy to Draw by the 90th minute, maybe 2-2 again but I think we'll pull through in the Penalty shootout if we get to one. Schwartzer (sp?) is a damn fine goalie, and our strikers should get the job done too.
2-2 vs the best defence in the world? Your on crack :)
1-1 I reckon if we get a good ref. And we will win a penatly shootout for the same reason Neo said, we have an awesome goalie.
2-1 down if we get a Euro ref, the amount the italians dive and roll around will get very frustrating for our players and they will retaliate. Expect 2 red cards at least :)
At the least as Neo said it will be a hell of a game :)
I'm putting money on this one. I honestly think we've got what it takes to knock em down, but could just easily fall on our faces as the pressure is going to be huge.
After seeing our game against Brazil, I think it's clear this Australian world cup side is indeed world-class. The 2-0 score against Brazil didn't reflect team ability. Many critics believed Aus actually played the better game, and for the most part I'd agree with them.
Our defence has been diciplined (bar the Cro match, but we were playing a very offensive game), and we're able to successfully create great opportunities up front - my only concern is being able to convert those opportunities.
Actually, my other concern is getting Kalec (or whatever his name is) away from our goals and putting Schwartzer back in - he was an absolute and utter dissapointment in our Cro game. First he sits in the wrong position for the set shot, then he lets a ball roll over him and into goals, then he fumbles it and almost scores an own-goal, then he throws the ball to the opposition. Waste of space, he is.
gunna be a hectic game. Italy have a good defence and will play for fouls more than any team we've played thus far. Will mainly come down to who the ref is. Viduka needs to shoot more too. We need a fair bit of luck to go our way for the first game this tournament. Italy are renouned chokers but so we're in with a good shot.
Tonights the night. I've been excited about the match all day. A big bunch of us are heading into the Deck Bar tonight to watch the game, if some more want to join us!
A damn solid first half from Australia this should turn out to be a great match if it keeps this way. Yeah Schwarzer is a great goalkeeper, beats me why he had to sit out last match.
my thoughts. cahil = diving whats with some aussie players not singing anthem? itallians scare the hell out of me we take the ball off them in thier half like taking candy off a 150kg woman who cnat move chips should have my babies "anything else is a bonus for australia" and a bonus for guus :P
Call it what you want or saying Italy were a man down, but that was by far the best game ever played by Australia and they completely showed Italy no two ways about it..
i just sat there for about 10mins just tuned out to the commentary just with my mouth and eyes gaping. compared to past games, the ref was great but he ****ed up the 2 most important calls, the red card and the end foul
Yep, and that’s sport Heck they were playing with 10 players when they should have had 11 So decisions go both ways, unfortunately we just got 1 that cost us
Quote from HeReTiC: that decision was harsh, not plain wrong. Not wrong? Our guy was down on the ground long enough to watch an eppisode of southpark before that soft cock Italian decided to go OVER (not around) him and dive like an... an Italian.
Ohh, and Go Schwartzer. That was some brilliant goal keeping like we should have seen from Kalac in the Aust v Croatia match.

you must have misunderstood what i said, i was saying the desision that gave them the penalty was wrong, but the one where the italian bloke got sent off was harsh, it was a yellow card offence not a red.
Unfortunately, soccer games can regularly be decided by the ref.
I know this can happen in other sports, but it doesn't seem to happen nearly as much as it does in soccer. There are other sports where refs can make plenty of bad calls and it doesn't effect the outcome as acutely as soccer. Nature of the beast i guess.
I can't share enough of my disgust simply using words. Truly dissapointing - we played an absolutely brilliant game and Italy did not deserve that win.
Quote from HeReTiC: you must have misunderstood what i said My bad, I was fired up.
I'm wearing my Aussie soccer jersy today because I'm damn proud of how well Australia has played throughout this world cup and can only hope we keep it up. Well done.
Quote from HeReTiC: that decision was harsh, not plain wrong. big difference, esspecially in the box with no time left.
hmm, i dont think we misunderstood. your sentence was refering to a single incident. the timeframe and position was "in the box with no time left". This refers to the final penalty and the preceding sentence "that decision was harsh, not plain wrong" gave no indication that it was talking about a seperate incident to the second sentence.

I am also proud of how well the socceroos did - they fought hard and gave the #13 ranked team a damn good run for their money - the Italian team played defence the whole game. just a sea of damn blue, and Australia still gave as good as they got.
Stand proud guys - you've gotten further than a lot of other teams, without resorting to bad play.
I am totally and thoroughly pissed... as if you'd make a call like that at the last minute... Soccer is a great sport but I think FIFA Refs need to get their vision and their mental stablility checked BEFORE EVERY GAME
