it is a movie of the comic 300 which is by frank miller of sin city fame
however the comic itself is based on a real battle. the battle of thermopylae i believe it was called in which 300 spartan soldiers (the spartan king and his elite bodyguards) held off around 2.8 million persian soldiers in a high mountain pass long enough for the rest of greece to unite and for the supply lines to said army (the persian navy) to be defeated
