ok i have the shits
got a pile of remotes (tv, speakers, aircon, cable) and i just want to combind them.
been looking around and found some flash little lcd screen universal learning remotes

just want to know a few things about them
how long do the batterys last?
how buggy are they?
what are your expirences with them?
what model is good?
1 word, Logitech.
But yeah I guess it depends what ya after. Any decent remote like that should come with a charging station. Buggy? guess that all depends on the brand and the support given. The logitech ones can be updated, although ive no idea how good Logitech is in that department.
Used a couple at my uncles place in England, sorry no idea of make or model but they were pretty flash units that controlled most things in the house, very cool to use and seemed pretty decent.

5-6 years ago i remember using a lcd remote at my mates house, it was "70 from DSE, i still see them in stores. it worked fine but i noticed the batterys only lasted a few weeks to a month.
i have the harmony and it is awesome. its about $200 if you order it from down south and $400 if you buy it up here.
trust me you want to invest in one.
i can do them a LOT cheaper than that.

There's two models - the $400 colour screen one, and the cheaper "70 one. I've got the cheaper one, and it is absolutely brilliant - you can even program your airconditioner remotes into this.
Just gotta convince the wife to spend the $200-$300 on a 880 model and my lounge will almost be comlete :p

You can find them much cheaper then that still, like "10 for the basic model and around $250 for the better one, Logitech do have a couple new models on their way though :)

I have a Harmony 520. Pretty impressed. However, in the past my old reciever had a learning remote, and considering your reciever is the heart of an entertainment system, I actually found it a better solution than the Harmony. More convenient control over the most important component.
i got the harmony 520 for $80 in a bulkbuy last month, great buy even for ~"10 other places. WoW have em but selling em at full retail ("70). Got it workin for austar box, tv/vcr/dvd/divx/aircon/receiver

im trying to set it up by running thought he software and its not sending data from the remote it seems

Yeah, I bought this too, and it's been an incredibly frustrating experience.
After I installed and upgraded the software and disabled all firewalls and anti-virus software, I couldn't get past the connectivity check. At first it would just tell me that I need to plug in the remote, hit a button to wake it up (which didn't work). But after a few retries it was somehow able to talk to the remote, if only briefly. It would get up to 20% only to stop because of "Error sending data". And the sessions would constantly time out, so I had to re-login multiple times.
I even called the hotline and they said didn't even know what to do. Apparently my plight has been logged and I should expect a call from them in 3 days to tell me what they think is wrong.
In the end, I've managed to get the remote to work, though I'm now in the process of trying to customizing it, which isn't happening atm.
What I did was instead of using the program that comes with the remote, I opened up Internet Explorer 6, and turned the Security and Privacy setting to Low. Then I went to www.harmonyremote.com and you'll click either New User Login, or Member Login if you've already created an account. I'll try to do the connection check thingy (which should work after numerous retries). If it fails, and give you and option to, just do the Test Drive thing. This way you can configure your remote before you have to do the connection check at the end. If connection check worked, you should get a message to upgrade the remote's firmware to 2.1, which also happens though the website. Once it's upgraded it'll do another connection check.
For me, I'm not sure how I pass this second one. Even though the program would open, it kept giving me a Error Sending Data thing, and the web page would refresh till it got a Web 500 error. When that happened I kept refreshing the page to restart the connection check, but on one time it just jumped to connection success, and allowed me to upload my remote.
One thing to note is that this whole thing for me didn't work on IE7, it kept throwing me a Web 500 error, so I had to do this on my crummy laptop which had IE6.
It's so stupid that you have to configure the device over the internet. What purpose could that serve? are they afraid of people pirating the remote?! Argh! Stupid budget harmony remotes.... Hope this helps.

I got a Harmony 880 from my credit card rewards program. So errr yeah "free". Best piece of equipment I've ever bought for my system. No problems ever with the software. (I downloaded version 7 rather than bothering with version 3 on the CD) I don't even think I've really used it properly yet and I have a couple of other items I wanna add to it like the aircon and the mini hifi unit I also own. I wish I'd got one sooner but 44000 altitude rewards points took me a while to amass.
I finally got an 880 also - almost the best buy for my lounge!
Fair enough the setup is slightly shitty, ( im using firefox to do my config) and i had to do a bit of remote learning to get a few features to work but once its up and running they are well and truly worth the money! Now my wife isnt complaining about the amount of remotes and how to make it all work
