Building a new computer (gaming), budget: $3000 Being the first time for me I thought it would be better to get opinions first before building the system.
I am in middle of selecting the equipment ill post my system up as soon as I am done. Just curious of what you guys would buy that falls with-in the budget.
I am also considering of going to a laptop. Hmmm?. pros: its more portable, can run off battery Cons: not as powerful as a desktop, no storage space And if anyone knows of any good laptops or anything please let me know

if you go the laptop route.. dont ****in touch Alienware! Even BARGE POLES are too good for them. 4 months *mumble* *mutter*, instant shutdowns *groan* *gripe*
lol i heard alienware was alright. never owned one myself i dont knoe the problem an issues any other suggestions for laptops? my friend suggested dell and pioneer. honestly i dont know which way to go lol
quad core hmmm... isnt that meant to come out early 2007? any idea on the prices?
i am fine with any case just after the parts first
I remember this same situtation about 3 years ago and an all knowing Eater looked at my list of parts and made a really good system to my budget. im still thankful to this day for the advice AND all the goodies he transfered over, but i do remember i certain problem of not copying the codecs so i could actually watch the media i got lol

quad core is out now, shouldnt be too long before you see em in laptops
Word of advice don't wait for the next lot of hardware you will be waiting forever. Outside of some specific task nearly all CPUs are good enough for anything you are likely to throw at them (graphics cards are the big bottle neck for games CPU don't get taxed that much and Dual cores arn't being used fully by games will be a while before quads even matter).

This is wise advice. Buy what you can afford when you want to buy it. No point waiting: something 20343828984 times awesomer is always coming down the pipeline.
Wait for quad man as mepm said there out now this means the software developers have prob got there hands on a few already and working on a new game. and by the time the quads are out there will prob be a better board and graphic card to select from. as for lappies who ever said pioneer back there is correct there awsome. and there assistance is unmatched I new someone that was out woop woop and her pioneer lappy stuffed up pioneer came out got it replace with bigger and better.
Your going to be spending half that budget on a quad core CPU and the prices aren't going to drop to entry level anytime soon. Be realistic people. Dual core will be fine for most people now and well into the future. Most games even now still don't support multi core processing and he did say a gaming computer.
You'd be far better off going dual core and getting a better graphic card. Unless you have the money (guessing at a $3k budget you don't) then imo don't even bother thinking about quad core.
and sorry I don't agree with you there Mepm. The leap in hardware simply because Vista is nearly around the corner won't be huge to a recently new system. Depending on budget though I suppose the graphic card can wait, unless you can fork out highend hardware, even then DX9 is going to be around for at least another year and more with current games, so purchasing something like an 8800 will do you very well now and into DX10.
As for anything else, it's not going to really matter, most people would buy a dual core these days and given the cost of a quad vs dual theres really not many that can make that jump now or hell probably even in 6 months time.
the leap in hardware this past year is bigger than the previous few years put together - they have made huge leaps forward in a short space of time, and the fact is vista has been made to accomadate these devices. quad core will become mainstream in the next few months and its price is gonna tumble. amd's quad core are out soon and fact is dual core will go the way of the single core - obsolete.
Well either way at least they are backward compatible in the sense that motherboards generally support both dual or quad as it's mostly a bios update, so it's not all that bad.
I'm personally only just about to make the jumpt o dual core, although in saying that i've also no problems upgrading a CPU in a few months time if the benefit is large enough.
MEPM is right again and that leap in hardware will get faster and faster so what took 2-3 years to do will now take 8 to 4 months now this might be hard to believe but its going to be very quick soon so yeah.
Look im looking to upgrade myself and the fact is whether you got 1k or 6k I wouldnt even look at the market yet knowing that if i went out on the week end and spend my 3k i'd be getting something that you guys have had for ages "sqrew that hippies" im waiting for quad or anything better which isnt that far away. so by the time it gets here all these new graphics cards that have just come out will be cheaper.

Haha not really, it's kinda all relevant :D A bit of discussion never hurt anyone and a bit of research and user opinions are there to help others to decide on their decisions.
He want's to build a new system now, your saying to wait and i'm saying if he's to build a new system now it'll be more then fine now and well into Vista along with being great for playing games for months and possibly a year to come.
Sure I won't deny that technology is moving insanely quick lately, but whether it be now or in 2 months, chances are you'll be faced with the same situation anyway ;)
Anyway yeah probably a good idea to stop ranting in these threads haha, post up what your looking into for a system :D

i might just wait till the release of quad cores then buy then with vista directx 10 and all. btw any idea when this will be released? i googled it to find many other threads saying later this year...maybe i should google harder

Yup Vista is due to retail late January so a couple months to go yet. As for quad cores, they are already available from Intel, although it's their high end unit which retails for about ~"500 give or take a bit depending where you buy it from. More models are on the way, but as you can probably tell it's new technology and you'll be paying for that for a couple months yet.
Mepm is right to a point though, it's only a matter of time before it hits mainstream, whether you want to wait for that is up to you. However making a dual core purshase now i'm sure you won't be disappointed at all ;)

Well, you couldnt be more wrong if you tried. Pioneer are the one of the worst for laptops....service? what service.....they rebadge a brand called "notebook computer", yep thats right, they just rebadge.
