Post 4
yes everyones quick to judge :P with little over 1 and a half months it has existed in the entire of 2006 on the market :P and its already classed as a failure, I thinks its a fantastic device, but like most big products it just needs time to gain momentum.

The Wii has only existed for a month and a half as well... it has gained nothing but positive press (the opposite of the PS3) and sold 4 times as many (the Wii has had shortages, too).
You could buy a Wii360 for the same cost as a PS3. :D
Post 6
When you sell each PS3 at a large loss you want to sell as few as possible dont you? It makes good business sense.;)
Go sony..

Maybe, but it's Nintendo and not Sony which is facing a class action lawsuit over the Wii by it's customers.
Post 8
Yes but the class action suit is started by people who are probably swinging around their controllers like morons. Seriously, a friend of mine has one with the supposedly faulty wrist strap. he TRIED to break it, but no matter how hard he pulled it wouldn't break. So I don't know WTF people are doing with theirs.

Well you know why Sony is so broke, remember the exploding ipods and dell laptop incident... they were faulty sony batteries
Post 10
I haven't used the Wii or seen it in use yet, but from the sounds of it some user stupidity may be involved, but it's obviously a big enough issue that it was in the news long before the lawsuit, and for Nintendo to try and replace the straps.
I think the point was that the PS3 hasn't had time to show itself as a failure. There have not been any newsworth technical faults with the console itself, the failure, if any, appears to be in either:
a) pre-release marketing and hype or
b) not having enough consoles on launch.
I can't say b) is a reason to be deemed a failure; very few businesses would deem any product where demand exceeds supply to have failed; they would instead salivate at the prospect of selling such a product.
As for a) they screwed up in the sense that they built up a lot of negative press which likely has gotten potential customers to buy a readily available Wii or Xbox instead of saving up for the PS3; on the other hand it has also built up a lot of hype and given the resell value of PS3s on launch...we can see at least some of the pre-marketing hype was successful.
Post 11
Someone post the VG Cat comic so Jaian understands what supply vs demand is. Sony failed not because it's a shit console but because of it's advertising and production levels. So yea it failed - bigtime, I have no doubts it's a decant product but the game titles and cost are enough to drive me away from purchasing one.
I might be tempted to when the price drops and the games get better. I'd like to see the PS3 produce as many copies as the wii did on launch and outsell the wii for launch in australia
100 bucks says it has no chance

Under the conditions you listed, the PS2 is also a failure; it too suffered from production delays which meant it was hard to buy and was being sold for exorbitant prices on ebay.
Last month the PS2 was outselling every other non-portable console, including the Xbox 360 which was out for a year at that time, so I wouldn't call it a failure. That being the case, I think it's premature to call the PS3 a failure when it's only recently been released.

Resolution/scailing problems, dead-on-arrival systems, malfunctioning blu-ray drives... the list goes on. How you've avoided seeing anything about the aforementioned problems blows my mind.
Oh and by the way, the PS3 is a failure not only because of the hardware, software, stock and cost issues, it's a failure because the majority of reviews and "impression" write-ups have been negative -- no one likes the damn thing. It's lacking intuative features/controls and pushes big spec numbers around to make us go "wow", but that's where it ends.
I'll also reitterate that there are no decent exclusive titles coming out until the start of Q2 2007, until then they're all 360 ports. Oh, and the launch titles were lame (confirmed by the majority of these reviews).

I don't look out specifically for news of consoles because I don't own any and never plan to (I sold the only one I ever received unopened). Now, if I do two Google News searches, one for 'ps3' and one for 'Wii', the first page (which consists of maybe 20-35 headlines) for ps3 mentions none of these problems, only the shortage and the Time reference to it being a failure. The first page of the Wii search has four headlines referring to manufacturing problems with the Wii.
Not to say that PS3 might not be more problematic, but news of the Wii failure appears to have gained more negative press than the PS3 problems for the mainstream. Maybe the Wii problems are more publicised than the PS3 because it's sold more, but I was addressing your comment about PS3 press being the opposite of Wii.

...
If noone likes it, why is it consistently selling out?
"Media Create Co. on Fri. reported that the PS3 sold 50,171 units from Dec. 4 to Dec. 10. By comparison, the Wii sold more than 85,000 units in the same period."
I find it hard to believe that there are 50,000 people last week out there buying PS3s only to resell them at higher prices.
If no-one likes them, why are they selling out? The comic is cute, but looking at last weeks figures; 50,000 consoles at US$600 bucks vs 85,000 consoles at US$250, I don't think it quite matches the reality of it; more a way to join the bandwagon and take a shot at Sony.
It's lacking intuative features/controls and pushes big spec numbers around to make us go "wow", but that's where it ends.

I'll take your word for it, but in saying that, I have to ask; is a console's success or failure determined by it's launch titles? I mean, it will help with initial sales (but seeing how the PS3 is selling out what little they can produce, I don't think they need any help in that regard), but for long term survival? The most successful Xbox 360 title is being released one year after the release of the console, and the console itself is pushing more units than on launch. I wouldn't call the Xbox 360 a failure based on it's first month of release.

thing about the PS2 is that it was the first next gen console to come out at the time. right now we have a Wii and 360. sony ****ed up. its a failure.
Post 21
(paladin)
Correct, but irrelevant.
In Sony's case, it was planned to be sold at a loss before the first unit hit the shelves. From what I understand most consoles are sold at a loss for years before they can be sold at a profit.
The Wii is an exception because it's basically a slightly upgraded version of the 5+ year old Gamecube with an innovative controller system. The Xbox 360 and PS3 are meant to be next generation consoles meant to stretch and expand the limits of game/graphics technology, as well as to become a home entertainment system to eventually replace DVD players. The Wii is primarily focused on gaming. Which is commendable, but the attempt to compare the two in many cases fail because they are not necessarily direct competitors. The Xbox 360 is the PS3s competitor more so than the Wii.
Post 22
No one said the PS3 is a bad machine, despite a few problems, it's expensive price and lack of games the machine is a powerhouse and over time we'll see this come out, hopefully.
But imo Sony realeased it too early a bit more testing and making sure the Blu-ray drive was good to go along with good stock levels would have done wonders for the consoles release for a start. A good game at initial release would have topped it off. To me it looks like Sony just threw it out there because they were getting left behind.
Also I think you can compare all the consoles because at the end of the day they are all gaming machines and that is pretty much what they are built for. If Sony is realeasing the console at a loss then they want to make money on games and hence why its a gaming machine first. I think after the release of the wii a lot of people took note of what makes gaming fun and it's not all about how pretty something on the screen looks. If anything this has become a very good thing for the console market and also the gaming one.
Edit: as for the 360, I think it fits perfectly between them, its got just as good power as the PS3, sure not as powerful but pretty damn nice none the less and has some great games to go with it! What I love about the 360 though is they realeased the HD-DVD drive as an external unit and very cheaply at that, which also works on a PC if anyone cares (USB2 ftw :D).

I dislike consoles. I've never bought one, don't plan on buying one, and have no interest in playing, althought I will probably give the Wii a shot since it sounds like fun.
You can interpret that to mean I'm a PS3 fanboi if you want, I don't care.
Quote:

I'm not defending the company. I'm defending comments that the PS3 is a failure. I'm not going to write a few paragraphs explaining to you the difference between the two.
Quote:

Technology-wise, afaik, it's anything but an underpar console.
In terms of launch titles it might be the case, but given that some of the best selling consoles start with a poor launch lineup, I find it hard to call the entire console a failure on those grounds.
Quote:

I didn't say they weren't competitors. I said they were "not necessarily direct competitors".
I guess you have trouble distinguishing between the two. Let's play with analogies:
A Ferrari 612 Scaglietti for $300,000 and a Mitsubish Magna Executive 2006 model for $30,000 are released this year. Both are cars, primarily used for the purpose of driving from one location to another. If I want to get from home to work, I can use both cars to do so. If I'm purchasing a car and those are two of the car models available to me, then yes, they are in competition with each other.
However, they are, to quote myself on PS3s and Wiis, "not necessarily direct competitors". The Magna might be facing similarly priced/featured cars from Holden and Toyota which would be more direct competition than the Ferrari. I doubt the Ferrari manufacturers see the Magna as direct competition either.
With the PS3, yes, it's going to have some of it's potential sales cannibalised by the Wii, but many people would never buy the PS3 at it's current price purely because of it's price point, and they would go with the Wii. Sony realises this, and have openly stated this before either console was launched.
So to reiterate, the PS3 and Wii are not direct competitors in the same way the PS3 and Xbox 360 are competitors. The main link they have is their release date.
Post 26
i'd rather play alex the kidd in miricle world than anything i've seen on the PS3 purely because of gameplay-ability... i love games that are fun.... not eye candy.....
Post 27
It's too early to tell how much of a success the PS3 will be. The only thing going for it is the power and the Blu-ray abilities.
At this point in time its hit rock bottom from a business pov. Bad stock levels, high price, running at a loss, Blu-ray is still not maintstream, game developers are having a hard time coding for the PS3, no top selling games, hell i'm sure the list goes on.
Time should fix these problems, but whether it's too late, guess we'll just have to wait and see.
From a consumer point of view, it's not too bad, but it's copping a bit with some crappy games, some technical problems, high price etc. In terms of a Blu-ray player it's actually a good device and cheaper then any dedicated BR drive you'll find, but then you have to find a PS3 too..
Just give it time peoples, the PS3 still has potential. MS and the 360 though I think have done very well, sales are strong, has HD-DVD capabilites at a cheap price and some killer games. As for the Wii it's purely games only at the moment, how long it'll last from a consumer point of view remains to be seen, but i'm sure Nintendo is making a killing ;)
Next consoles should be really interesting after this release :p

Because there are none. Easy to sell out when there is medium to high demand and small supply. That medium to high demand is dropping dramatically however, with more bad reviews surfacing every day.

I won't argue with that, but as far as I can see there is still high demand for the PS3 with a relatively weak launch of game titles. When demand is low, and supply is high, then yes, there is an arguement to be made that it's a failure. Doesn't it make more sense to call it a failure after this has happened rather than assuming it will?
Also, bad reviews ≠ failure, just as good reviews ≠ success, whether we're discussing games, movies or books.
Quote:

You're correct. The cheaper and more available unit outsold the PS3. In a debate as to which is selling the most consoles, that fact would be both relevant and indicative of you being on the right side of the debate.
You'll find however that I'm not suggesting that the PS3 has more sales than the Wii or ever will.
Post 33
I personally think its too early to call the PS3 a total failure the same goes with saying the Wii is a complete and utter success, even though time will prob follow the current trend, and yes its hard to argue with fanboi's, speshly when its pretty obvious there are alot of wii and xbox fanboi's :P
I think the PS3 is a great machine and personally can't wait till it gets to Australia, the Xbox 360 a great bit of hardware. I think the xbox menu looks like snot same with the orig xbox ;) but they have some awesome games.
The entire list of wii games just doesn't interest me though, im sure its fun and amazing with lolly pops shooting out your ass in total excitement; if you enjoy the games it offers. Prob why i thought the gamecube wasn't anything great either.
Its just my point of view and I don't consider myself a fanboy but I have my own views on what I like, and no stinking review can tell me any different, to base peoples point of views on only reviews? I Personally don't let movie critics tell me what I should or shouldn't watch or what console is better and what is worse, Id rather find out for my self.

I guess both the Nintendo Wii and Sony PS2 are collosal failures then.
The Wii has huge marketing budgets and game development costs to recoup (the marketing budget for the US alone is over $200 million), and even though they never had any intention of recouping those startup costs in the first few months, it's a failure because we're only going to look at how they perform over the first six weeks.

Post 46
ahh ok well its been what 2 months... so id guess theyd have spent 40 million so far...
they make approximately $40 US on each console sale and the sales have reached approximately 1 850 000 (from nexgenwars.com) so thats a profit of
$74 million just on consoles which would easily cover the 40 million estimate however on top of that 85% of wii purchasers have bought zelda which is a nintendo produced game so i imagine thats more profit per game then a 3rd party game. also the majority of wii purchasers have bought 2 additional games with the console. Not to mention that virtual console game purchases would be near pure profit since those are games that were developed for other systems a while ago...
the majority of ps3 purchasers thus far have only purchased a single game with there console and most of the press related to the ps3 launch has been negative. however i dont think anyone really believes that ps3 will be a failed console it has to large a fanbase for that. However considering that its first exclusive title will only be released in the second quarter of 2007 (and thats release date for japan and the states) i dont see its demand reaching heights until that time. However considering that game is FFXII the console is guaranteed to sell as that is one of the games that many people will buy a console for.
As for comments that ps3 games look graphically about the same as xbox 360 that might be because thus far ps3 games are xbox 360 ports so regardless of the ps3's power the games should in fact look worse....
Sony will sell high because this short supply high demand factor leading to sever shortages and theft and in some cases riots is the same thing that happened with the ps2 release although in that case it was to a lesser extent. And the free publicity that they get from it helps there sales later on the whole no such thing as bad publicity. But the fact that i know alot of people were saying over a year ago that ps3 was gonna launch with a supply shortage on purpose for that specific reason i just have no interest in sony. They dont deserve any respect and their methods disgust me. They dont care about their consumer and although i seriously doubt they will be a failure next year i genuinely hope they are because there methods to induce sales should not be supported and as such i conclude your a f**king w*nker for being one of there fanboys.
in conclusion Sony = Japanese translation of satan

Quote from phatboi;290718:

I have no love for Sony, the only Sony product I own is a stereo that is now 11 years old. The reason I'm posting in this thread is because Wii fanboys regurgitating vitriol about anything irritates me:
Quote:
in conclusion Sony = Japanese translation of satan
That's exactly the attitude I'm talking about.
Now you want to get into maths though, and although I only have a rudimentary grasp of mathematics, I have an advantage over you in that I'm not so blinded by love for my favourite console that I grasp for numbers that make my console look good and ignore the realities of the situation. Let's see what you've come up with:
Quote:
ahh ok well its been what 2 months... so id guess theyd have spent 40 million so far...
That guess of yours is based on the assumption that any marketing department will have the same budget for the first month of launch as for any other month the rest of they year.
Tell me fanboy, are you trying to tell me that Nintendo - who are going to be spending $US200+ million in the US on marketing in the first year - are not going to spend a greater portion of it in their first month of launch than for any other month? Don't be stupid.
Quote:
they make approximately $40 US on each console sale and the sales have reached approximately 1 850 000 (from nexgenwars.com) so thats a profit of $74 million just on consoles which would easily cover the 40 million
Well fanboy, you've already begun cooking the numbers to try and lie about the profits.
Here are the figures:
Annual Marketing Budget for the Wii in the USA: US$200 million
Number of worldwide sales of the Wii according to a website which provides no sources or references: 1.85 million
Number of Wii sales in Japan, Europe and Australia combined: 436,000 + 325,000 + 32901 = 793901 (source).
On the rough assumption that the USA accounts for every Wii sale outside of of Japan, Europe and Australia, and assuming this website has accurate figures, then Wii sales in the USA are 1.85 million minus 793901 = 1.05 million consoles
I'm going to assume you took the figure of $40 by subtracting the price of the components (which added up to about "60) from the wholesale price (about $200).
Now I'm going to have to explain that electronic devices such as video game consoles and computer systems don't magically assemble themselves, they require factories to assemble them, and in those factories are workers. Workers need to get paid, and unfortunately for your ridiculous fanboy financial figures, Nintendo will have to pay those workers, for quality testing. Hell, Nintendo also has to pay for developing the Wii in the first place.
Yes, I know you'll desperately grasp at the fact that most of the technology is already in the Gamecube, but it's not the Gamecube, or you wouldn't have bought it. There's a new motion sensing remote (which is the reason I'm going to be playing on the Wii eventually, to try it out, whereas I have no interest in playing the Xbox360 or PS3), there's the slightly upgraded electronic components etc. Oh, and there is packaging, warehousing and shipping costs. Also, economies of scale plays a factor, Nintendo doesn't make a profit when the first console is sold, it takes a while before mass production and sales evens out.
So to summarise, your profit figure of $40 is based on the assumption that the slave-pixies working for Nintendo do so for free, and can throw around pixie dust to make the components assemble themselves and to be branded and packaged, and then they call Santa to move them around the world (for free).
Now, neither of us have official figures for the actual profit Nintendo makes per console, but one of us does not have our vision clouded by a Japanese bellybutton as a pair of hairless Japanese ball slaps against our chin (hint, it's not me), which means that person might be able to suggest a more reasonable guestimate of the profit (for now, the profit per console will grow over the next half year or so, if you don't understand why, ask): $20
So we have 1.05 million Wii consoles sold in the US since release.
We have a guestimate profit of $20 per console.
That's $20 million dollars.
For marketing, I do have the benefit of having majored in marketing (with focuses in Consumer Behaviour and Market Research), but to be honest, I don't see that this case requires anything more than common sense. You went under the retarded fanboy logic that Nintendo would spend the same amount of marketing dollars in the first month of their launch as they would for any other month, and estimated they'd spent $40 million of their $200 million dollar budget. Even under that ridiculous assumption, Nintendo are making a loss of $20 million.
Under more realistic conditions, Nintendo would at least spend twice as much in their launch month+ (over a month) as any equivalent period, so let's bring that up to $80 million spent on marketing. On a console profit of $20 million. I don't want to insult you, you might be able to the maths, but given switch between figures for the US and worldwide sales to try and give your arguement some kind of support, I'll play it safe and do it for you: $20 million profit minus $80 million cost results in a loss of $60 million.
Quote:

*sigh*
Yes, while in the long run games produced by Nintendo will produce more profit per game, again, there are no fairies who produce and market these games for free. Games costs money to produce. That money is supplied by Nintendo. To make a profit, Nintendo has to actually first pay off development and associated costs with the game.
Quote:
Not to mention that virtual console game purchases would be near pure profit since those are games that were developed for other systems a while ago...
And have to be ported over or adapted in some way to run on the Wii. Plus costs associated with setting up a system to buy online, bandwidth etc. You're not going to quote costs to me because neither you nor I have any clue as to the profits Nintendo is making thorugh these virtual console sales.
Quote:

I don't really care about how good or bad the PS3 is. My point is only that it's too early for Wii-fanatics to celebrate about the PS3s 'failure'.
Quote:

Feel free to boycott a company based on rumors you heard about their marketing strategy, I'm sure that makes sense to you. I do recall reading a few months ago about a blue laser diode shortage which was affected the ability of all blue-ray player manufacturers. This is something which can be verified, and might explain the shortage of PS3s. At the very least, it sounds more reliable than rumors you hear online. But of course, you say that Sony is the equivalent of Satan, so I suppose I shouldn't expect any rational arguement when it comes to Sony from you.
Quote:

So you're a Wii fanboy who hates Sony and hopes they fail. That's not surprising. Personally, I don't want any Sony products unless it's related to their home theatre systems, but if I were to be given a free Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 (already got the Xbox 360 free) I would sell/give away the PS3 and Xbox 360 and keep the Wii.
Just because you like one product doesn't mean you have to pray for the failure of all competitors. Competition is healthy.

Jaian u have got waaaayyyy to much time on your hands - i seriously doubt anyone is going to be bothered reading all that bs
you dont even own a console, hell u dont even play games besides WoW dude seriously the fact is that the ps3 projections so far dont look good, and nintendo have struck gold with the wii - SIMPLE AS THAT

Check this out then fanboi's
Apparently demand for the PS3 has slowed right down, with some even being returned to the store. It's getting harder to sell them on E-Bay to, apparently no-one wants to overpay for them anymore.Yet they are for the Wii.

The PS3 launch HAS been a massive failure. I think it will pick up when some decent games come out.
Truly tho I hope that Sony fails, they used to be such a good company. Just a bunch of wankers now

You might want to actually read the article they're referencing.
Specifically it says that PS3 console bundles (which typically retail for US"000+, which is a few hundred bucks more expensive than the console alone) are not selling as well through online retailers. It hasn't mentioned demand for PS3 consoles in retail stores, where the majority of PS3 sales occur.
The reality of it is as follows:
"Sales in the week from 4 -10 December were 50,171 consoles, Media Create says. That makes it the second-best week for the PlayStation 3 since its launch week in early November when 81,639 consoles were sold, according to the market data provider."
and
"The latest Media Create figures also show that it's not just Sony that is grappling with supply issues. Nintendo, which launched its Wii console in Japan on 2 December, saw sales fall fast during its first full week on sale due to low supply. Just over 350,000 units of the Wii were sold during launch but this fell to 85,439 in the week of 4-10 December Media Create says."
Basically, people are still buying Wiis and PS3s in the shops as they're released, but very few people are willing to spend over a thousand bucks on console bundles from online retailers.
All you have to do is do a basic google news search on "PS3 + sales" and you'd see that demand seems to remain high given that there are still supply problems with the PS3.
Post 55
Also sharp is is going to invest a lot of money into producing blue ray diodes (Most for its own products though) but the rest it sells will probably be munched up by Sony to help get more consols out the door. Considering they were the original reason the consol had major shortages.
Its also interesting that a company would invest lots of money into a tech many people said has failed, suggests that it hasn't heh :P

I did read the article heres an exerpt
"Last year we tracked several one thousand dollar Xbox 360 bundles which would sell out in less than two minutes after becoming available."
Drake noted a US "000 PS3 bundle was on offer at an online retailer for over 12 hours recently, claiming, "This sort of thing didn't happen with the Xbox 360 until well after Christmas."
Thats a direct comparison between the X360 last christmas and the PS3 this christmas, indicating that demand for the PS3 is nowhere near as high as the X360. Considering that the PS3 is probably a better unit the launch has been a failure
Post 57
Erm one bundle system not selling out in minutes does not mean a great deal :/. Would be interesting to see what crap was actually in the bundle. Granted their doesn't seem to be to many great PS3 games out at the moment but that will probably pick up.
Post 58
You right of course its not proof its an indication. I still think it will be a success in time, but as for the launch it has definately been a failure.
The last thing im going to add to this pointless argument is:
http://www.brandintel.com/brandintel.aspx?pageid=industries_gaming_tracker
Tracking of consumer sentiment and perception of the 3 consoles.
There are craploads more WWW's all saying that it has been a flop. I have been unable to find any saying it has been a success. Just google PS3 launch, virtually all of the top 50 hits are negative, the remainder are mostly ads and marketing.
As for demand vs supply if I make a very very crappy product that only 2 ppl in the world want and produce just 1 (at a massive loss) does that mean my product is a hit? After all Jaian if i've shipped all my units and I still have twice the demand over my supply how could it not be fantastic. Isnt this your logic?

Wii Cost Summary
Graphics chip: $29.60
CPU: "3.00
DRAM: $7.80
Optical disk drive: $31.00
Power supply: "1.30
Manufacturing cost: "9.50
Cost total: "58.30
manufacturing is in there.... and considering it sells for $250 in the USA im sure they took the wiimote and nunchuk as well as wii sports into account before concluding the $40 profit per console but you seem so smart so lets assume it is just total of 20 million profit from console sales so far... even though the console actually sells at a higher cost and thus higher profit margin everywhere other then the usa.
so your assuming they port each single game rather then just emulate?.... jeeze you should be in game development
and give me an estimate for production and marketing costs for zelda please cause id like to know how much think each dual layer dvd costs coming from yourself an unbiased opinion... cause really after production costs the rest is profit per sale obviously will go towards cancelling out the the investment so lets go with the maths
80% of console buyers buy zelda so thats 80% of 1 850 000 = 1 480 000
now the cheapest price i could find for the game was actually at dell's website
http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?sku=A0758988&cs=19&c=us&l=en
at a price of 49.90 now considering each disc and box and little booklet wouldnt cost more then 4.90 U.S to mass produce (thats just an estimate im sure youll correct me. Also considering this was the cheapest price for the game i can find most were at least 60 im going to assume this is because dell is a big enough company that theyre making about $5 profit for themselves per game 10% not to shabby. so lets get down to profit for nintendo my estimate is again $40 :O wow thats the same number that you corrected me on for the per console profit (corrected without giving evidence to back yourself up) anyways....
40 * 1 480 000 = 59 200 000
now you tell me how much zelda cost to make and well subtract it
now so far we have a total of 20 million plus 59 million thats 79 million so far since your no good at maths.
but lest we forget the majority have purchased 2 games
majority meaning more then half
so lets go with half shall we 1 850 000 / 2 = 925 000
lets say nintendo only makes 5 dollars per game sold since there probably 3rd party (im being generous to you here)
thats 5 * 925 000 = 4.625 million
add that to the previous amount
puts it to approx 83 million yay we hit your target based on your marketing expectations
but wait what about the from each of the wiimote's and nunchuk's that get sold? since apparently they cost about 15 dollars per pair to produce and as a pair sell for 60 usa
i think we should just drop it now though and say pure and simply that nintendo is making a profit.
ps your a F*cktard

yes.
i still find it hilarious that the latest and greatest big-screen HD 1080i/p lcd/plasma screens still look shit compared to the good old fashioned TV
regardless of what you are watching
Post 65
Actually, certain true-720p plasma screens produce a really high quality picture, not all that much worse than a standard CRT. For whatever reason though, the quality of LCD TV's is almost always drop-dead shit. Artifacts, pixelation, all kinds of visual yuckiness. Looking even at the new high end Samsung and Sony Bravia LCD's -- the quality is still crap.
Biggest problem now and since their entry into the market with both tecnologies is poor colour reproduction, terrible blacks and latency. Bring on SED.
Post 66
We have a 42" HD plasma at work that actually approaches reasonable picture, but theres no substitute for the filtering you get from a good old CRT :P
Post 67
I have the latest Samung 40" LCD, pixels, picture etc etc all look fine to me.
YOUR JUST TO FSCKING PICKY REC !

Post 69
my tele is 15yrs old, and it still has a better picture than most of the HD plasmas/LCD screens i see in places like wow
Post 70
50" Pioneer Plasma (not current model) no problems at all, and to be honest, when all things considered the Plasma still looks better then your traditional CRT. TFT's (with the exception of the new Sony's) are okay, but greys and blacks don't quite get the right smoothness to them.
Post 71
Quote from Hitokiri Kensuke;290870:

If by traditional you mean 15 year old 4:3's, then perhaps, but mainly due to resolution. The fact there is no latency or colour issues on the CRT still generally make it look like it has the cleaner picture though.
If you mean newer 16:9 tubes such as Sony's WEGA CRT, they sure a hell don't! Technically and visually, there are clear differences which all go in the favour of CRT. With your LCD/plasma the resolution is clearly higher, but it falls down in almost every other area.
On the topic of resolution, the noticable resolution difference between true 720 screens and quality "HD-compatible" sets which scale (such as my KVHX32) is negligible.
Scaling aside, Sony's KVHR36 WEGA CRT (model above mine) does 1440x900 - higher than most current LCD and plasma screens. With a unit like that, there's simply no competition. It blitzes everything I've seen using plasma or LCD technology.
As I said, bring on SED. :D
Post 72
I'm willing to bet most people with a decent 720p/1080i/p native LCD/Plasma screen don't watch material in said native format (Normal TV, SDTV, Wii, and older consoles are not). Hence why they think some content looks crappy on said kind of screens. Take the Wii for example, your TV (usually) is upscaling the picture to fit your screen, this is pretty much just like resizing a jpeg or something, well thats the basic idea anyway. So the output really isn't all that great.
Imo most CRTs give a slightly softer type of picture and tend not to notice things like jaggies and pixilation when compared to an LCD/Plasma. I'm not sure if there is a CRT that does 1080i/p natively but I can safely say watching something in native 1080i on a capable LCD looks gorgeous. I'm not debating the differences between CRT and LCD I know they have their differences just pointing out why I think most people think LCD/Plasmas don't looks so good at times.
Post 73
99% of of Plasma sold don't even actually display 720p let alone 1080i/p at native res anyway.
Post 74
I've already explained why they don't look good, and it often has nothing to do with scaling -- it's the technology itself.
It's not a matter of opinion, it's quite simply fact. Resolution and scaling aside entirely, CRT's produce the higher quality image, mainly due to colour reproduction. If your eyes can't see the difference or your eyes tell you an LCD/plasma looks better, that's great, but doesn't change the facts.
Post 75
True but they are pretty damn close to that, and if the screen has 1:1 pixel mapping then you can view 720p content natively, most LCD/Plasmas have a larger resolution, only just.
Post 76
dont argue with rec, it never gets you anywhere :P - plasma/lcd suck - bring on SED!!!!!!!!!
Post 77
Haha I know he won't change, and that's his decision and he has his reasons for that ;)
I just think a good LCD/Plasma running content natively imo looks incredible and the differences compared to a CRT are minimal at best. It's a shame most CRTs cant do progressive scan (ie: 720p and 1080p) because that would pretty much change a lot. But as said, yes bring on SED ;)
As for colour, meh, how many people do you think even calibrate a monitor properly Rec? I'm guessing almost no one :D
Post 78
I do
Post 79
I'll reiterate; it's not my decision, it's fact. :)
I've already said some plasma's look damn good, but in reality still aren't up to scratch with a high quality CRT.
There's a reason why designers (be that print, web or other) only use CRT. They need images produced and displayed with perfect accuracy.

I couldn't give a rats arse what time magazine thinks. I'd more listen to Picture magazine then them. Most people bitching about PS3 just seem pissed they can't afford one. I can, and I'll be enjoying the hell out of it come March.
Personally I'm glad in got delayed here too. Any launch machine bugs (which there dont seem to be many anyway) will be worked out by then and the game lineup will be a lot better by then as well. Motorstorm looks like the first racing game I've been really excited about since GT first came out. Should be sweet online too. The F1 game looks great too and I haven't played one of them since PSone.
