The Leffe drinking has begun. It was corked like a champagne bottle and shot off across the yard with the same likeness.
I forgot how bloody awesome this beer is. It'd be interesting to whip out a modified DeLorean and scoot back to 1152 to see how true-to-original the current recipe is.

I did... but realistically, that was never going to happen. Since Saturday night (last night), we've finished 8 bottles of win and a 3 litre bottle of Leffe between 3 people. Superb effort, I think.
Another 2 bottles will go tonight without doubt, then we've got the 1999 bottle of Mentor for Christmas lunch, and another few ready for the boxing day test.

Leffe Blonde is about the worst in the range, but it's still better than 90% of any other Belgian brews available in bottle-shops here.

They were so big, it really distracted from the size of the Leffe bottle. Blurring them was the only way to redirect attention.

Just to reinforce the awesomeness of this beer, last saturday night went to the european bier bar, and they have Leffe blonde on tap...
And as my friend and I were leaving the hotel i said: "i would really like a risotto or some prawns for dinner", he said: "i would really like an inch think steak". Special #3 was a prawn risotto, and Special #6 was an inch thick steak.

Leffe is meant to be served 6-8 degress, and most taps are set to 4 degrees, so by the time it reaches your mouth it's about right.
Finer dark Belgian ales are usually meant to be served 8-12 degrees, and I find are even better closer to 15, in which case you're actually getting a better tasting experience by buying the stubby yourself from a bottle shop so you have more control over things like that.
The Belgian Beer Cafe here in Adelaide continue to serve me Gulden Draak at around 4-6 degress, so now I buy a Leffe at Draak at the same time. I drink the Leffe while the Draak warms to drinking temperature. :)

Oh man, i have memories of that place when i was in adelaide last, walking in drunk, and walking out 5 Stella's later extremely happy with the place. the one on rundle isnt it?
i'm going to hunt darwin for somewhere they sells some good belgian beer. because it is by far the best beer ive tasted.

Mmmm, I spent new years in Belgium and yes - they have many many fine beers. One pub was called 'Leffe Cafe' and yes, you can't even begin to imagine how large my smile was when I walked in.
Brought back a pair of Leffe glasses from there too, they'll be cherished for a very long time.

Yeah it's the one on Rundle - only one in SA.
I know there's a place on Cavenagh that sells Chimay (or used to), so I'm sure they stock a few others from Belgium and surrounding regions.
The only truly great bottle-shop I've been to, when talking about imports, is called the International Beer Shop in Perth. Simply awesome.

Well.... what do they expect when they offer fine beers like Leffe 9, which (as you may have guessed) contain 9% alc/vol. The worst part was it tasted damn good too.

Bush is a widely available Belgian with 12%, Rochefort 10 is 11.3%, Gulden Draak is 10.5%... although the highest contain up to 26.5%. Definately damage material.

Well on my list of things to do in my lifetime...being upside down drunk in each of Australia's Belgium beer cafes is a fixture.
I've got Sydney and Perth out of the way. So i guess that means Adelaide is next on the hit list. (dammit when will they build one in Brisbane?!!)

Mmm, my Leffe starter pack from Belgium. From left to right, Bruine, Radieuse, Big bottle o Blonde, small blonde and Tripel. Leffe 9 didn't come in the pack :( Luckily it was readily available in the pubs. The two glasses made it back home in one piece too :eek: :grin:
