PC troubles...no display or post beeps

Hi there,

i've ran into this problem a few times now with my mate's computer.

The PC shuts down for no apparent reason and when you reboot it, no display, no beeps, but the pc boots up like it would.

On one occasion, i've rebuild the PC, checking each component in a working PC beforehand, which after, still didn't work. So i replaced the board.

after a few boot ups, it still happened with the new board, no display or beeps, until an hour later and suddenly i was welcomed with the post screen and then proceeded with the loading of windows.

Now, its happened again to a different computer, just suddenly shut down, screen on standby, computer still running though, but haven't got a clue on why it's doing this.

Anyone experience this problem and what way did you resolve it.

Two different computers you mean?
I'll take a big guess, but i'll say power. Both machines use the same powersupply? It sounds like there's power obviously but something isn't up to its job (powersupply), but why two computers i've no idea.

My computer does this sometimes also. Boots up but with no screen, or takes 5-15 secs before i get the first beep then begins to boot up. I am pretty sure that it is power related. When i get jack of it I might replace the power supply with a bigger one. Then again I need to upgrade maybe middle of next year, it has been 3yrs now.

A guess Jono? Im willing to bet it's the power supply.

i had this problem with my computer a while ago.
i bought a new more powerful power supply and it hasn't happened since.

I've had that, and it was power supply.

yep, two completely different PCs, one's a 775 Pentium 4 system with a 400w psu, another is a sempron 3000 with a 400w psu.

i've asked my mate to try a different powerpoint in another room and try turning it on, so waiting a reply but will see him tomorrow.

So getting new power supplies could stop this from happening?

Sure can, all depends on the problem, but bad powersupplies are usually the cause of stupid annoying problems like this :p If you have access to a semi decent powersupply take it with you and try it out.

But that's just from my experience.

On my last computer I got random reboots and no posts before finally finding the Power Supply was at fault and buying a better more expensive one with extra room to move. Active PFC makes sure it only sucks what it needs anyway.

400W is not enough for modern computers IMHO especially with the dodgy power in Darwin.

1 extra hard drive, fan or DVD drive could've pushed it over the edge. If he doesnt have a better PSY try with minimal fans (cpu,chipset,graphics) and only 1 hard drive and see if that helps.

you havent fried the pcs in a lightning episode :S..

Thanks Wortel, will try that when i see him tomorrow.

He has a surge protector for his PC so i doubt it was a power surge causing it to crash, unless other peripherals connected are out too then the surge stuffed up.

Hopefully its just a psu swap, saves me from dismantling the PC to bits.

had a similar issue earlier this year, everyone said PSU, turned out to be the mboard though - got a dodgy ASUS A8N-SLI Premium board from a bad batch (rev 1 - 1.02 boards) - yay for warranty
