Just do it yourself. I did mine it really is quite easy, not strictly legal but easy. Then again I do work with electrical stuff.

Look, I'm not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but there are legal consequences when you circumvent the law. It might be an expensive law, in some ways a stupid law, but unfortunately it's a very expensive law to avoid if you have a fire in your house.

The law is in place to stop people electrocuting themselves and sueing or miswiring and then ripping off the insurance its pretty simple.

I guess I'm saying: play it safe, and protect your investment. It's a good tradeoff. I don't want anyone to suffer from the loss of an uninsured home or electric shock. Except for Mao Tse Tung, but it's too late to wish him ill.

I haven't installed an aircon; my father - who can - still hired a licenced sparky.
I'm not talking about voiding your warranty. I am talking about house insurance if and when your house catches fire. If the insurance company can show the a/c wasn't installed legally, they will refuse to pay. Look at any insurance policy for just about anything, and doing some illegal partly or wholly leading to the claim voids the coverage.
I appreciate that you have the skills and know-how to do a good job. I'm just saying you should consider the effect on the insurance of your property.

People do it themselves because at the moment it is IMPOSSIBLE to get a sparky to come and do it.
If they do come your looking at 3-4K for a base unit, they can charge this amount because there is way to much work for the fridgies and sparky's.
I know plenty of them, they all have as much work as they want and can charge what they want.
The hardest part of self installation is lifting the damn thing into place and holding it there.

just bought a 1.5hp split system for $480 bucks, cost $450 for a back to back installation
and that was in Katherine.....

I've had a few mates try in the last few months and either.
The compnay doesnt bother calling back, cause they dont need the work.
The company charges thru the ass, cause they are rolling in cash and work.
The company laughed when they said it was a home installation.
Believe me, im seriously thinking about taking up a Fridgie apprenticeship.
Apparently apart from Daicons they are all the same inside ( like PC's )
And if you have IT skills you get recognition of prior learning and your apprenticeship is shorter.

The aircon is installed better than an electrician would do it. It is installed exactly to requirements. The invoice from the installation was burnt with my house, who? I dont remember?!? How can they not go for that? Otherwise they could just knock back everyones claims by saying prove you didnt install that switch/powerpoint/aircon/fan/plug/oven. OH and my house is fireproof, it will never burn down.
And Coco's right I rang around looking for a fridgy last year about this time the only one, and i rang everyone, the only one who could come was looking at a 3 month wait. All the others really just couldn't be fkd. A friend of mine just had a 2.5 split installed that cost about $800 at mates rates

Ebola don't be such a miser. You just got promoted to SGT and earning more than Sponge and me. Buy the whole thing from a good local supplier who will also install as part of the price.
You should pay around "500.00 for what you want and have warranty which is important in our climate.
Have you tried Darwin City and Refrigeration Air conditioning?
Laz does great deals, and greek too, so work is number 1. I use him all the time.

The reason why their is a great deal of flamming is because you have too many fingers in the pot. So each person from the consumer perspective is giving their honest opinion, but the experienced people are giving their knowledge of the trade.
So you have this agrument. But mostly, I will say 'you get what you pay for'. Trouble is everyone has installed an aircon in their lifetime so they become self appointed experts. Only problem is the experts know what they're doing.
But a wonderfull read netherless.

Where did you hear this???? Im doing a sparky prenticeship atm and even with my panelbeating apprenticeship and the last 8yrs in IT it doesnt make a pince of sh1t difference.

The words you are after are "it was there when i purchased/ moved in to the place" :D
But you are right on the warranty side of things.
I Installed my bedroom split before a long time before i started my apprenticeship as i had the sparky side covered. However i could not for the life of me find a company who would come and do the refridgeration side - they either wanted to do the whole install from scratch or nothing or charge me full install price just for the refridgeration bit - rip off merchants!!!!.
Ended up being who i know that helped me find a fridgy to finish it for me - and the warranty bit is of little consequence with this day and age of throw away components. Find the cheapest ($300-$400) and if it last 2 years well its time to get a new one maybe ( if its snafu ) or get it repaired, as more and more things only come with 1 yr warranty and youve gotta pay for extended warranty beyond 1 yr now
