lately ive been seeing these "statehood" people about in shopping centres pushing their propaganda to the mums & dads of the top end. My question is; if we were to become a state, do you guys who would have professors at CDU who would fully understand the situation, think we would be able to have more freedom in areas such as open speed limits? & how about ownership of pistols & then theres regulation of porn stores, atm NT has some really lax laws in these areas, will being a state enable us to have more freedom in these areas? & if so, do you think we will actually become more liberal than southerners or just become just as lame as everywhere else in Oz?

If we ever do achieve statehood - i dont fully understand why we would have to change our name from the Northern Territory to gondawindy to crap liek that, why cant we still be called the Northern Territory or the state of the Northern Territory - no pun intended...??

Im all for statehood, but the problem is we dont have anywhere near enough people to get the tax income to pay the bills. Until that changes or we get a bonus payout of some kind from the federal GST we cant financially support ourselves.
Everything else is moot.

The short version is that it will become harder for the Commonwealth to interfere with NT policies and laws for some areas.

None of the states raise the majority of their own budgets. Every state receives substantial Federal & GST grants according to budgets and accepted formulae. The NT already receives a higher GST-payout-per-head than anyone else and that formula would most likely persist.

Do you know about all that federal road funding that the feds offered to go 50/50, but Martin didn't even try to match the price. We don't need to maintain //open standards anymore + double the fines. The Martin Coffers must be swelling!

i think we stay a territory call it old fashion but seriously
look at all the other states and then look at us we are better off maby just cause we have all the water in Australia but yeah nuff said.
